Dumb: My sidestand slipped off the flagstone paver and into the adjacent muddy dirt as the bike was idling, with my laptop hooked up to it for logging my ride (finally getting to it, Gunter!). So of course the bike shuts down. Right it, go to start, needles sweep and instrument lights come on with key on, flip kill switch: no fuel pump whine. The bike turns over with ignition switch, but of course w/ no fuelee, no startee. There's a relay click from the diode/relay boxes in the fusebox when I flick on the kill switch. What was affected by the fall that would cause this: sidestand safety switch (didn't think there was one on my bike)? BAS? Fuel pump/ignition relay pack in the fusebox?
Any light to shed on this?

Fuses? relay? loose cable?.... umm look for trouble codes

Yeah, now that I have ECMSpy I thought I could retire the modified paper clip to read the codes manually. But one would have to start the bike to use ECMSpy....

I lived 2 years in London which isn't Yurp but most people here in Murca think it is. I have also lived a bit in Normandy, and travel in France when I can, as my wife is French.

the ignition only has to be on to use ecm spy, it doesnt have to be running

So now I might be able to add a third trouble code to the other two that I was going to try to diagnose with my ill-fated logging ride. I already had the "o2 sensor - always lean" code 13, and the engine temp sensor fault to ground code 14. But at least those didn't prevent the bike from starting up....

If the BAS has been activated, you need to turn OFF then ON at the key...

Still no fuel pump whine.

Mitch, I tried using ECMSpy this evening to try to read trouble codes, but I got a window saying, "could not get firmware..." . What is worse, they won't even read manually, by shorting pins 1 & 2 (done this before just fine, but nothing at all this time). Also, my LCD odometer is not on when key is turned. And the needle sweep was sort of not consistent tonight, either. I'm putting bike back on battery tender tonight, and will see tomorrow about anything else I can think of. But any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

woz - Neutral light is solid.

Pash - I did turn the key totally off yesterday before turning on again... and did the same today. Nothing.

I'm liking this less and less. Let me think this through again:
Bike was idling w/ ECMSpy hooked up and running.
Biked keeled over. Bike stopped.
Lifted bike. Turned key off. Turned key back on, flicked kill switch. No fuel pump whine. I still do hear a single click coming from the gray box-like relays or diodes in the fuse box when I turn on the kill switch. But that's all.

If the bike has gone over the bank angle sensor (BAS) will cut the engine out but should reconnect once the bike is upright.

earth wire come off of fuel pump (inside frame) i have had it before :yup:
worth a look if you cant find anything else, just a pain to get to for a 1 second refit.

Found the culprit, I believe. Looking for shorts in wires from ECM, I removed gray and black connectors, and there's a white wire that comes from the harness into a small connector set between B and G connectors. It was loose. It's labeled "Connector 164 A / B" in the service manual. Not a clue as to its function.

It was either that, or just pulling the black and gray connectors & replacing them did something. No chafed wires were visible between the connectors and the harnesses.

At least I'm back to the business of diagnosing the rough running problems. But of course, it's raining here so much it would make an Englishman depressed.

That white wire is for the exhaust valve.
