About 1.5 k ago I visited the stealer who stressed that I should only use HD plugs as the Uly chews up other brands. I parted with my money and guess what? Poor cold starting.. often on one cylinder,occasional hesitation and today on closing the throttle one plug failed temporarily.

It chimed in on two shortly after but it seems that a plug is faulty. I am going to use NGK or Bosch next time. Anyone else had this problem?

I suspect the HD item is made by Champion and I always avoid them since my days of poor ignition in two strokes.

Another issue is that if water hits the regulator it runs on one cylinder. That is a really odd one!

Are you sure your tick-over screw has not worn through your front HT lead?

yep. certain. Only strarted when I fitted new plugs but today is the worst.

Never had a problem with H-D plugs. Sounds like a dampness problem to me.
Try a squirt of WD-40 up the plug caps.

I started out with nothing and still got most of it left.

It lives in the shed and the road was dry at the time. Maybe I am just unlucky re the plug but I will not be using them again.
We find our way through trial and error. Time will tell which road I am taking! Either way it is only a set of plugs.

Nothing explains the misfire if the regulator gets wet though. It immediately goes onto one cylinder.

Still suspect you have an HT problem of some sort...............have never had any problem with harley plugs in 50000miles in the X1. Are you sure that the lead didn't get damaged inside the cap when it was pulled off the plug?
Or temp sensor problem causing it to go into skip spark mode.

Resistance in the leads appears fine but granted they are difficult to remove. I have no idea re the sensor but doubt that is faulty as it is usually running fine once started. I intend to strip it down this weekend to look for any probs but replacing the rear plug with a old..HD. one sorted the problem so I belive the initial diagnosis was the correct. The plug which I removed was certainly dark compared to the front and the exhaust sooty.

I know no one with espy etc and will not be going to the dealer (although I hear the guy in Bromborough is very good)

if its any help i had the same prob last december after getting my scg in november just sounded really lumpy onlt one header was hot rang plym hd fuming as it was a month old they came and got it and said i had a duff plug? they replaced them never missed a beat since? untill 5 miles after my 5k service going up the a38 cruising it seemed like some one turned the kill of ser 3 seconds but has bee fine since? also found it confusing how they seemed to think they had a guy that was pretty clued up with buells, that had fine tuned my bike the best he could, bearing in mind i had a piper and a stealth on it, as he said it was running rough.....and it does seem better

Yes it is interesting to hear. I am not surprised at the technicians comment and this is why I do not use dealers. I appreciate there are good ones but I really think it is poor that we have to travel so far to access them. Maz is only 60 miles from me but I think that is too far.

When I replace the plugsI will update accordingly but that will not stop potential issues with the regulator.

60 miles is that all , it's worth it.
i know people that travel a lot further to be Maz'd.

"No" it is not worth it to me. If I had no other option then "yes" I would travel. I have no issue with those who do and are satisfied with the service received. Nor have I reason to suspect it would not be first rate.
It is personal choice and a sense of achievement to maintain ones own machine. Something I have managed for the past 40 years.
I do not profess to know everything as a result of my experiences and fully accept a huge hole in my knowledge of moden electronics. For such support I would have to consult a professional but even then I would prefer a local person if possible. With Buell this is not so no doubt I would have to travel!

Im with GM on this one, I too like to do as much as possible to my bike myself, especially after having muppets masquerading as motorcycle mechanics giving me poor advice, and living in the arse end of snowdonia. But a trip to is well worth it, yes the quality of his work second to none, but its the knowledge that he freely passes on to you that make a trip worth it. I get the impression that he secretly has a high regard for those of us that want to try and do our bikes ourselves even if it seems that sometimes we are just mere numpties.
Honestly it will be the most enlightening 60 miles you will ever ride

Morini, are the HT connections fully home on the top of the plugs and/or the coil connections? The plug ones especially can be a bit fiddly sometimes.
As for the reg/rec problem, is the service join watertight? What about the condition of the potting on the unit itself?
EDIT: Think of the stress cracks on the Lambertini twin pick-up unit
