The current licence EB has to build 1125/1190 and XB's only covers race bikes and specifically excludes road bikes I believe. I don't think he would have the facilities or staff etc to start building road bikes in any volume even if H-D relented and extended his licence. EBR has a staff of 3 I think so it would take some considerable investment to start volume production again.

This is just a twitter stunt to keep the Buell name in the headlines for longer, so maybe EB has a potential backer or is actively seeking some investment and needs to keep his profile high?

......................chances are that anything that he designs in the future would infringe on the patents that HD owns - it would have to be something completely different and he would have to throw his own rule book out of the window - I would doubt any major backers would want to take the risk, knowing that they could be sued by Harley Davidson ... :(

That sounds really good for the promotion of American design know how and evolution of the breed!? :? Own the patents and stuff your own people until the 'cowhorns' come home or every lardarse cruiser is sold.

Only way i see it would be in the Foggy petronas sense,

Build a load of over expensive 'production' machines, without a dealer network set up, sell a couple to executives of the company and get around the rules to be able to run in superbike competition.

i would love to see Buell compete in WSBK one day. However i think it ranks up there with me winning the MotoGP title on a C90 at the moment :|

cheers for the insight, but is he using new parts to build the race bikes or do you take your bike in and he wheels out an 1190? or what i mean is are they still producing parts ie frames etc for ebr?

From looking at the EBR website it appears that they have a supply of 1125Rs which they strip down and rebuild as race bikes, EBR have some take off stock parts for sale on their website.

So if you want a 1190R it will start off as a 1125R ...

It does make you wonder what will happen when they run out of unsold 1125 models though? Do they start buying used ones to turn into race bikes?

Rotax can presumably build more engines but I don't think the tooling still exists to make new frames and cycle parts after all of the factory stuff was sold off.

The rumours of new Buell road bikes seem to ignore the lack of a factory, staff or money for some reason.

There's an article about it in this weeks MCN, according to the report his "non build" agreement with HD has expired and he is working on getting the 1190R street legal so that he can start building and selling bikes again. 8-) :D :o

Dont believe everything you read, especially if it's in MCN

......how could he build 1190's for street bikes when H-D own the patents ?

As I said before, even if H-D released the rights, how would he finance this and how/where would they be sold from ?

I know Erik is a fighter but the bloke's turned 60 now, he's financially secure and has already lived the dream 8-)

As an aside, MCN also ran an article saying that HD have sold MV Augusta for 83p ...

It may be MCN, but the words are from the horse's mouth.

Erik says he needs to raise £7 million to get production started and isn't scared of starting from scratch again.
According to the interview he is currently working on alternative designs for the fuel system and chassis, which remain HD property.

Erik said,
"Getting back into streetbikes is what I am all about. We are really working hard to have a road bike ready for production in 2011. The 1190R is the bike we always wanted to build but couldn't when we were part of the Harley Davidson operation. We're starting out again really."

Good kuck to him, I hope he secures the funding. 8-)
