Hi guys,

i have not yet got a Buell but are seriously thinking about one. I just came back from a 3400mls round trip from Scotland on my BMW R1100S, but it maybe that the S has to go as its to bumpy and I want something nice and tall hence me joining this forum...
I dont want to go the GS route - as everyone out there seems to be on it...and some have even labelled it the "new Volvo Estate".

so, i am thinking of buying a Uly. Now my question:

Which model should i go for? The early ones XB12X or the 2008 XB12X or is the XT better. Ussage will be touring and weekend rides. I dont mind it being tall...and i have test ridden the original Uly when it first came out...and loved it (apart from the steering lock and noisy fan)

Anyway, as money is tight ish - i would like the pro's and con's of the newer model and is it worth the cash? i know the older Uly's seem very keen priced.

Thanks for your answer in advance.

PS: anybody wants to read more about me - I keep a website about my biking tours etc...feel free to look (Scotland trip is on there too)

Are you touring solo or two up?

The early ones (pre 2008) will be easier to improve performance should you want to as the newer ones are more restricted. I rode a 56 plate uly and that seemed alot of fun std compared to my new 2009 Buell. Depends on your preference. That Uly dived alot when braking but I've not tried the XT. I have a BMW 1200GSA and a Buell XB12ss. Buell is great for fun riding especially if you change the exhaust, BMW best suited for longer rides - but I don't think they are the "new Volvo Estate". Horses for courses!

non taken - it's just my opinion!

I currently own a GS, Buell, RD350 and my fav bike is Buell by far, then RD350 cause thats just mad and then BMW. I like the grunt of the Buell and if you like changing exhausts Buells sound great with pretty much any type of exhaust change you go for imo.

I've got an 09 XT. Haven't tried the X on the road, or earlier models, so can only talk about my own.

I love it. Superb all-rounder. Corners brilliantly, handles brilliantly, brakes have amazing feel, sounds great, comfortable, torquey, loads of space for luggage and passenger, quirky, grin-inducing.

Downsides - fuel economy is poor (I believe due to emissions regs throttling the engine), stock windscreen produces too much buffeting/noise for me (I'm 6'), headlight is weak.

I've only ridden 1200 miles on mine so far, but so far I'm a very happy camper. :)

I ride an 07 Uly..... 2 up with the luggage, its a serious mile muncher. The standard seat is without doubt one of the most comfortable seats to grace a motorcycle, and it just seems to do everything very well.

I dont know how anybody can complain about economy, no matter how i ride I never seem to get less than mid to upper 50 mpg.

I thought about chopping it in recently and had a few test rides on guzzi's, benelli, etc etc..... non of them won me over. THAT is how good this bike is.

Buy one....Buy one now..... :D

You should also consider the STT. They are a couple of years old but, IMO, putting an Ss subframe onto a Uly makes it a fab looking scoot with all the benefits of a 12X.

Wise words.

Having owned an older X, new model X, and an STT (and done a few hundred miles on an XT), I'd vote for the X - which one you pick depends on whether you want the chance to improve and tweak performance or whether the heated grips and better steering lock of the new bike grab you.

The STT is absolutely, outrageously brilliant. The best XB for Sunday afternoon blasts (or track days), and, on a twisty backroad is pretty well a match for anything. Stunning. It's also surprisingly good at distance work. I was comfortable throughout the Germany trip last year, including the splash and dash trip on my own back to Calais. But, the riding position is more cramped than the Ulysses, and it doesn't have epic levels of comfort in the way the Ulysses does. Wind protection isn't as good, and it can get a bit unsettled when the roads get rough.

My times on the original Uly are fairly well known among those who were on here a couple of years ago. Mine was supremely comfortable and reliable, and fun and brilliant on a ride I did in 2007. A 15,000 mile ride. Almost impossible to fault it. Interestingly, the engine got looser and significantly quicker as the miles were piled on.

The 2008+ X adds the grips and steering lock, but the engine is definitely a bit strangled. I'm hoping that miles and a few mods will make a difference. I'm no longer interested in trying to crack the fast group at Brands Hatch though (the STT cleared that hurdle!), so it doesn't bother me as much as it would have done a few years ago. And it is so comfortable and easy to ride it's unreal - particularly after the STT which is pretty feisty - I don't know how big the geometry differences are on paper, but the riding experience is surprisingly different.

The XT is, for my money a bit pointless (unless you have ickle legs like Digger ;) ). It's like a Ulysses-lite. It does come with the luggage as standard which is good, and the larger screen (which I hated).

Overall, and for what it's worth, I'd vote for the original X. It's fast enough to get you in trouble, and eats up miles in a big, big way. Selling mine was the worst car or bike decision I've made.

They're all good bikes, though, mate. You'll love whichever one you get.

Al

I will go an Saturday as there is one in semi-local dealers for sale...its on 2005 XB12X with 27k miles, but all luggage etc...I want to see what condition she is and may take her for a spin if i can...
the want just over £3k, but i reckon if i offer cash i may get her for less.

Thanks for all your anwers guys!
Lars

27000 miles? I would be looking very closely at the warranty they are offering. If it doesn't have an FS tensioner fitted I would be concerned. Similarly if it has a new belt fitted I would be suspicious.

TBH, I wouldn't. It could be a well-ridden scoot that possibly hasn't had that many issues or it wouldn't have got to that mileage.

Also, if it is from a dealer, I understand that they are now required to sell with a 6 month warranty.
