Double page article about, and interview with, Erik in today's Motorcycle News.

He's now free of the contractual obligations of the severance deal with HD and will be building road bikes in 2011.

it would be great to see the 1125/90 engine continue to be built (assuming thats possible). with more development it would be even better, and as long as reliability is improved, then a real winner.

i wonder what chassis he is thinking of? Tubular? :couch:

But you may get your wish, the Rotax engine in a tuber chassis - especially if HD get picky about the fuel in frame patent ...

Any financial backer would want Erik to offer up some security and having spent 25 years 'living the dream' and only been an employee for most of it I doubt he'd jeopardise his security by starting all over again.

He's already moaned about budget problems running EBR so he's obviously not got a pot to piss in, let's be realistic, he started with borrowed engines, as soon as he got started producing bikes he sold out, spent years forcing his engineering philosophies down peoples throats and where did it get him in the end???

He'll be happy playing around the tracks and living it up and as soon as he has to put his hands in his own pockets he'll fuck off into obscurity to be never seen again.....

How would he finance all the warranty claims? I reckon some 1125s are costing HD a couple of grand in labour alone for:

* Clutch (x however many times it is fixed)
* Alternator
* Loom
* Reflashes (mine had 3)
* Gearbox oil jets
* Cam chain tensioners (?)
* Belts
* Rusty exhausts
* Wheel bearings
* etc.

He could follow the example of how BMW have financed their large number or recalls and warranty repairs over the past 15 years: move part-manufacturing to China and charge gullible customers large amounts of money for servicing relatively "easy-to-work-on" bikes ;)

Either way, I am all for Buell's return, no matter if the frame would be tubular, boxed alloy, carbon fibre or card-board lOl

By making a bike that had none of these problems. ;) but then it wouldn't be a real Buell :run: or should I say a hd buell.

It is possible that Erik already has a backer - if the reports were true then Bombardier ( who own Rotax ) wanted to buy the Buell operation but HD refused - it is possible that they may be interested in what he has to offer, now that he is free of the shackles.

I feel that most of Buell's ( as a brand ) problems were caused by HDs insistance of getting the product to market ASAP and resolving the problems later.

But even if they develop a product longer it would not neccessarily iron out all of the bugs - how long did KTM work on the RC8 before it went on sale - and it still had its problems !

Assuming he did start making and selling road bikes again, how and who would get them to the punters? Setting up outlets must be pretty pricey and going into partnership with existing dealers is just going to create the same problems he had previously, or is there some cunning plan I'm missing? :(

Bombardier already have a dealer network as they sell various rotax powered vehicles - they own the engine manufacturer -
