What's the difference between an x1 and an s1. I am talking in aesthetical terms? Pictures would help.

Not sure if this is a serious one, but the main visual difference is the aluminium subframe on an X1, whereas the S1 has plastic. Slightly less noticeable is that the fuel tank cover is a separate item on an X1 (with creases), whereas the S1 has either the small or manta ray tank.

The air boxes / filter housings are completely different, and the X1 has a scoop on the left hand side to cool the rear cylinder. The routing of the exhausts is different.

The instruments are also offset differently, so the fly screen has the hump on the right (as you sit on the bike) on an S1 and the left on an X1. The ignition key is on the dash on an X1 but on the left side of the engine on an S1.

Getting more anal, the frames are different, most noticeably around the footpegs as the X1 frame can be separated, the swing arms are different, one has FI whilst the other has carbs, the passenger footpegs are removable on an X1 without an angle grinder, the engine colours...

Thanks Norm. I struggle to see why the s1 is more desirable given that they are older. Or is it just down to the fact that there are less about?

I think that it is just a matter of aesthetics, simple as that. The X1 is the better bike due to evolution and continual improvement - I don't think too many would deny that, but the S1 remains the favourite for many just because it is such a pure essense.

Peter & Jane books use pictures for people who can't read

Wait till the end of the week and I'll send you a picture of my S1 and my X1 next to each other. Spot all the differences and you could win a cash prize :D

The S1 is sex on wheels, the X1 needs to be in the right light and viewed at the perfect angle to look anywhere near as pretty as the earlier model.
The book is written by Americans for Americans and is almost as annoying to read as a HD workshop manual.
IMO, of course.
