I have been thinking of this for a while as I use a shoei x-spirit which is noisy and using it for 4 years I am thinking of changing it for a more road based xr1100 but by looking at comments it maybe no better, has anyone had the chance to compare the two?

Another heads up for the Schuberth. Mine is the S1 Pro, it is exteremely quiet, and makes ear plugs a thing of the past.

Well I really rate my XR1000, but like I said earlier, I think that helmet and bike combination can affect wind noise :)

Apart from an open "CHiPs" style lid the nosiest lid I've had is the one I use now. It's also apart from an open lid the one that mists least.

Custom made protectors are the way to go for me. I already have them for shooting.

For what its worth I have found that some lids work well on one bike but not another. Like I get high speed buffeting on the Uly with a HJC lid but its fine with a Arai.

And yes always use ear plugs. Even small wind noise will damage your hearing in the end.

I can highly recommend the BMW system 5 Helmet, really quite even on a Buell.
The helmet is even manufactured by Schuberth,

I use X-spirit and yes its very noisy but wasn't exactly designed for comfort on the road :yup:

also use the xr1000 and will be changing that for the xr1100 noise not a problem on both of them as friends use 1100 and they are quieter, for comfort and best vents xr1000 by far the best...also new x-spirit heavier than the old one.....better vents tho

Good idea .... or alternatively, buy a lid with one designed as part of the product, like, er, Schuberth for example :D

Think most the wind nosie on my multitec comes in around the visor / jaw area.

It came with a kind of skirt that clips on the bottom and it doesnt work either !!

Eric.

the reason i bought the schuberth c3 was its low noise level. also as a spec wearer it makes life easier.i still wear earpugs on any ride over 1 hour.

the quality of the c3 (and other schuberths i assume is well worth the extra money. before i even picked one off the shelf it looked better finished than other brands next to it.

+1 on the Shoei multi tec. Think its got noisier as it has got older, 3 years now and the joints have freed up. Bought a cheapo Caberg (Still 5 star SHARP rated for safety) recently. Rode home on my SV1000 with the Multitec in the tankbag. Thought the Caberg was quiet till I rode again without the tank bag. Different airflow made noise level way higher than Shoei. I also find it depends on whether I wear leathers or synthetic jacket(quieter). The shoei has its own skirt thing, the Caberg just has a funny little chin piece.
I have a helmet coms system and I cant use it with the Caberg. IT works OK on the Shoei even if I have plugs in to lower overall noise levels.
Another friend has Schuberth flip front and its quiet, he rides in synthetics or leathers. Sharp ratings are not the best though if that matters to you.

I,ve got a Shoei XR1100 and really rate it, very light, brilliant venting system (even on minimum vent, wind noise only noticable if you sit up like noddy with all the vents open  FFS lie on the tank, chin on the clocks and chuffing well gun it. No wind noise just that glorious S1WL earth shattering roar :P Ear plugs cant block that out it comes thru your bones!
Have found that wearing a fleece snood, or a talliban style scarf, as opposed to a buff assist with the chin skirt in stopping air getting under the lid. Sorry cant coment on the other shoei model.
