How could I check the oil accurately without warming engine up first?
As I said before the oil was drained and filled back up with the correct amount as specified in the manual. So I assumed the level would be correct. Could the oil not have drained fully? I left it overnight until it stopped dripping. I have changed the oil before in the exact same way with no problem. :!:
I can accept I may have overfilled, but dont know how. :? If I thought I had done something wrong I wouldnt be asking these questions. I just need to know that the problem is definitely down to overfilling and not some other problem.
Please can I get the info to sort this out first, then you can take the piss when the bike is sorted and I am a happier bunny :D

I warmed the engine up for about 15-20 mins then removed the drain plug and dropped the oil. Then I removed the oil filter and let them both drain overnight.

So, if you removed the drain plug immediately having stopped the engine after the warm up and then filled the new filter with oil before fitting, then put 2.5 US quarts into the swingarm, your engine wasn't over filled.

I put 2.5 in, including the filling of the filter.

Are there any other reasons for a bike to dump its oil from the breather other than overfilling?

In that case.......what do you mean by it was running rough ? ie. was it running rough because of the oil in the airbox, or was the oil in the airbox there because it was running rough due to excess crankcase pressure caused by a failing piston etc. ????

You'd have to massively overfill a dry sumped engine to cause a problem ie. the breather in the swingarm would have to be swamped to cause crankcase pressure.

Not sure about that one. All I know was that when I first set off the bike seemed ok and after a couple of mile it started to lose power intermittently. Because the bike had not been run for a few week due to me being on holiday I assumed it just needed a good run

Have a look in the How To section for some chat about oil (you were right Maz - The How To section is a waste of time).

Normally when things go wrong, they are a consequence of change. The change here is that you drained and refilled the oil.

Have you checked the level on the dipstick yet?

A litre is only a tad more than a US quart.
