 Post subject: Belt snapped !

If I didn't have bad luck then I'd have none at all - the belt on my 2008 1125R has just snapped - at 7708 miles - the only saving grace is that I was just on my way out from work, so at least I wasn't stranded by the side of the road. :roll:


Anybody know the part number as I need to get one quickly !

So now both of my Buells are off the Road - it may be time to get the Honda through an MOT ...

... the V Rod is not a good autumn/winter bike - the front end is a little "twitchy" in the wet.

There appear to be none in the warehouse ! :roll:

But Shaws have one and are mailing it to me ! 8-)

So now I think I'd better get some spares - trouble is the CR is a different belt so I'm going to need two ! :(

AAAGGGHHH !!!!!!!!!!!!

3 hours to fit the belt - admittedly with teabreaks and other interruptions ( I am at work ). Followed the manual to the letter but the new belt seems very tight and I cannot torque up the rear axle correctly - still have more axle to tighten up but the torque wrench is clicking - suppose I'd better triple check that part number to make sure they haven't sent a CR belt instead !

CR belt is longer than the R..... ie. R is 145T and CR is 149T.

Belts are stupidly tight, you will have to wind the axle in using much more torque than the final figure :idea:

I assumed that would be the case as the belt was tight enough before I tightened the axle.

All done now - just need to give it a ride to settle things down.

Are belts directional ? Cannot find anything in the service manual about it, but somebody has said to me that they have to be fitted the right way round. Maybe if you're refitting an existing belt but surely it doesn't matter if you're fitting a new one ?

Doesn't matter when fitting new ...but like you say if refitting it is always good practice to put back the same way .

Hi Sportster_man,

It is normal and good practice to fit the belt in a direction that makes the writing on the belt readable as you stand looking at it from the drive side of the machine. This is how the factory fitted them.

The belt should always be fitted the same way as it beds in in that direction, to change it round can cause early failure. This is a rule of thumb for chain drives too.

Hope this one lasts a little longer for you this time ;) .
