Are there any electronic gear shifters that would suit you ?

I've seen a couple fitted to Buells and I think it was Norm who bough an X1 a few years ago that had been converted by the previous owner for similar reasons.

That was a Kliktronix system. :yup:

Some sensible mods which will save headaches in the future. :yup:
On the primary side upgrade the primary chain tensioner to the thicker one and the gear detent plate to the harder pointed star shape one.
Change the front engine mount from the inverted V shaped one to the much stronger ali billet one (availible from Maz)
On the timing side cut down the cam cover and re route the oil lines then they wont chaff and wear thru on the bottom of the engine. See how to section. At same time upgrade the oil pump drive gear.

This all involves a lot of spannering but its possible for even a numpty like me with the help of this club, and parts wise ain,t mega bucks and will build a hole load of reliability into bike.
An AST shock is also well worth the expense as is full US gearing.
All the best Rich

Thanks for the tips Rich & Maz. Looks like a serious list of mods to work through, but I'll try to proritise and tackle what I can. Nice to know Maz is there for parts etc. when needed. It's all a bit new to me at present, but at least I've got a worksop manual to refer to.

I've used a Kliktronic on my partners previous 535 virago trike. Worked pretty well when set up properly, and still allowed her to gear change conventionally. However the Kliktronic would struggle with the heavy box on a Buell, and probably wouldn't be reliable for too long. That's why I favour a mechanical shift. Better reliability, durability and a positive feel for the gearbox. The cross over linkage I made for the monster has now done over 50,000 miles on 3 different bikes - M600, M900 and M900 trike. All it's required is regular cleaning and greasing, plus a few new rose joints and bushes after they wore out.

I'll post some photo's up when I get a chance

Been busy on the gearchange and other mods. Shifter is still a work in progress and not very pretty, but at least it's functional and I can swap cogs ok. The frame bracket clamps are just a temporary fix to get me mobile, and I plan to replace them with something better ASAP. I'll also powder coat or polish where I can later, but for now a quick coat of smootrite will do. Still got plenty to do such as fixing knackered rear caliper, and leaky fork seal for it's MOT. But it feels good to be making progress at last.

S1 seat unit is also in the process of being fitted. It's supported on bolt on rear subframe made from bent 14mm bar, so I can revert to full subframe + M2 seat when needed. If I do it properly including Q/D electrics, I expect to be able to swap over in 1/2 hour max.

Lots more work to do adding brackets for indicators, numberplate etc. When I've cleaned it up after final welding it'll paint it to match the frame. Hope to have it complete in a couple of weeks if I can get enough garage time in.

Not really an option as of this weekend - see previous post ;)

I heel/toe change on the 900 monster, and I've used that method since 1999. I've also had 26 years to get used to riding minus 1/2 leg, so should hopefully manage the Buell ok.
