You are indeed correct. GSXR K5 frontend. Forks, wheels, yokes, brakes, the whole shabang. In terms of fitting it, it was quite simple. I re-used the original X1 stem. All that was needed was to get the local engineering shop to create a steel bush that would allow the stem to be pressed into the lower yoke. The GSX Titanium stem is a lot chunkier thatn the X1 steel stem, so there was plenty of space left to create a bush. Can't remember now what they had to do to the top yoke, but I think It was just making the hole bigger. Simple job. Then the whole thing fits. :yup:

Just purhcased GSXR K7 Radial master cylinder, pretty much unused. I did that cause I am not getting the 'feel' and initial bite from the brakes. Even with racing pads and braided lines. Hopefully the new master cylinder will cure it.

Viewing the bike in the box pictures is that an early GSXR front end? I assume that you had a X1 stem copied and then pressed into the suzuki yokes?

So, I'm shamelessly creating anoda hijackingpost in this thread. Bit of an update for the boys and garls on what I am up to at the moment.

My Harley project is on hold because there is only 24hs in the day, and work and Wieteke have priority. So there is only soooo much I can accomplish. Secondly, now that its getting warmer and the salt is disappearing from the roads it would be daft not to put the X1 back together and actually RIDE IT! :headbang:

So, heads and barrels are back from machining. New valves and guides, compression raised a smidgen to provide crisper throttle response (yet to test that claim), barrels bored out to next size and new pistons.

Head and barrels are now with the vapour blaster to get the old powder removed. Then they'll be painted with Por-15 engine paint. The rest of the engine is all cleaned and degreased and waiting for some warmer weather and time to do the painting.

Swingarm, tail unit, headers, cam and primary covers are with the polisher to spank them up. Then they'll get a coat of Por-15 Glisten PC clear coat so that I won't ever have to polish them again. The Glisten stuff is 2-pac clear especially developed for polished aluminium and chrome. It comes with a transparent etching agent that will allow it to stick to the metal and not come off. All reviews I have read praise it, so wish me luck!

Apart from that, well, I'll have a look at the gearbox and the clutch to make sure they are happy and then it'll all come back together. The aim is to have it all done by the end of March, as long as nothing else stands in the way. Will create a new thread once I start painting the engine so you can take the piss! :ner:

Later!

Thanks this was exactly what I would like to do on my S1 and had a K3 onwards front end identified as possibly the best one to use. Will have my eyes open for a complete front end to minimise cost of finding everything seperately.

Quick update. Been accumulating goodies the last two weeks. And I picked up the bits from the polisher today. I spoke to the blaster people today and the heads and barrels are done too, so I'll be picking that up tomorrow. So unless something gets in the way I'll be painting the engine this weekend. And then clearing the polished parts next week.

Almost new GSR Radial Master cylinder. Brake Porn!! :ill:
Image

New LED Tail light. The old one was knackered beyond use and this one comes with a number plate light too! :yup:
Image

Engine paint and clear coat for ally and Stainless bolt kit from eBay.
Image

Shiny!!! :yup:

I'll have to polish the underside of the tail section and clear out the remaining paint. The polishing guy forgot that! :|

Headers came out real nice. Like cam coating.

They've done a good job getting a mop in behind the cross over on the pipes :yup:

P.S You've left your Gimp mask hanging on the wall above the bench ;) lOl

 I'm glad you didn't see the blowup doll I keep in the garage. The compressor does a great job at inflating it in a flash when I get 5 minutes alone... ;)

Check this out!! Just came back from the blasters. They did an AMAZING job Vapour blasting the heads and barrels. You wouldn't believe how clean they are. I'm chuffed to bits. Well worth the £60!!

Looking at the heads: does it make a difference if the gasket side surface is rough (like shown above) or plane, e.g. after fly-cutting?

Forgot to post these. Got myself a nice little oil rad from a BMW R1150. The pipe fittings and mounting tabs lend themselves perfectly for mounting it vertically onto one of the frame rails. Just gotta fab some clamps out of ally to mount it to the frame. Dead cheap too. £27 on ebay. And because they seem to be mounted just under the headstock on the beemers, the used rads are in a very condition. I.e. no road grime and stone damage to the fins. :yup:

Hi Gunter, I know the head gasket surface in the photo looks quite rough, but in reality its not that bad. It looks a lot smoother in real life. Its just the macro-close-up effect that makes it look like a ackne faced teenager. ;)

The surface is as was taken off the engine. No blasting was done to either of the gasket surfaces because I didn't want to damage them. Only vapour blasting, and that doesn't eat into the surface. So whatever you see there is the original surface as far as I know.
