Thanks for the advice on the re-dressing of the gasket surface chaps. Much appreciated! ;)

Last night I spent about 3 and half hours sanding and polishing my tail section, sorting out the bits that the polisher didn't bother doing.... :headbang:

Not much to show for it though, because I wasn't happy with the finish due to less than ideal surface preparation, so I decided to scrap the effort and START AGAIN.... I'm basically polishing the underside of the tail section and the part where the tailight mounts to. But despite sanding the crap out of them with 240 and then 600 grit I couldn't eliminate all casting marks, so they showed through when polished. it looked like shite.

So I started attacking it with 80 grit to get the casting marks off and then I'll go progressively smoother with the sand paper.

There is however good news! ;)

This is how I ended up looking after the saga.....
Image

And this is what I built myself to stop me from becoming a black and white minstrel. Should've thought of that in the beginning!!
Image

And :maz: I finally discovered why my clutch was making a squeeling noise when taking off. Really weird shit this... The bearing that sits in the clutch basket was spinning in its race under load. It wasn't properly loose, just loose enough to spin. You can see it on those marks in the photo.
Image

So I went and ordered a new bearing and some bearing glue, so that the thing won't move next time. This is a result BTW. This bearing costs around £60 from HD. Order it online and you can have it for £8 delivered!! :yup:

I'm quite surprised that Nuttah deleted his politically incorrect post about the bearing glue... ;) I thought I was funny to be honest!

Anyways. Up and off, so here's an update. I finally recovered physcially and mentally from 12+ hours of sanding and fecking polishing, and after a bit of a row with Wieteke about me spending too much time in the garage and making peace, I finally feel like I can see the light at the end of the bloody tunnel with this Buell. I really had NO idea it would be this much work to get this bike back on the road. But then I only have myself to blame for wanting all those bit polished and the polisher cocking it up BIG time. Idiot. He certainly will not be polishing any of my metal bits again, that's for sure!

So. Here's the current status. I've taken the rest of the week off so I can climb this mountain and possibly get the engine back together and maybe even into the frame. But that may have to happen next week, cause I'm still waiting for some parts to come in from Guildford HD.

This is what the polisher left me with (underside of tail section). He probably thought that it wouldn't be visible, but hell yeah, *I* can see it!!
Image

So I spent HOURS sanding the shit down with 80 grit, then 180, then 600 grit and then polishing. I was physically fecked after this and wrecked a drill....
Image

These are the ally bits after polishing. I then degreased them with thinner, and then applied the etching agent that comes with the Por-15 clear coat for ally. Leave it 2 minutes then rinse with water and dry with air gun.

This is the 'costume' I had to wear to paint the bits with the Por-15 stuff. Its 2pak so highly toxic. So I had to go to great lengths in my garage to ensure that I didn't get this stuff on my skin or breathe it in. I was wearing a proper breathing mask under that btw.

Image

You can see in the photo that the swingarm has a bit of an orange peel finish to it. All the other bits have a mirror finish. It was bloody hard to get this painted cause my face 'mask' was fogging up from the inside so I couldn't see exactly what the hell I was doing...

These are some of the engine bits painted in black and silver enamel. The black stuff is brilliant. It dries fast and leaves a nice smooth film of paint when brushed. The silver stuff however is a pain in the arse to brush. That's why I sprayed the heads, barrels and cases. When sprayed it leaves a nice uniform aluminium finish. But when brushed it looks a bit shite. Luckily the only part that I painted in aluminium with a brush is difficult to see!

And pushrod tube bases...

Pushrod tubes getting a new lease of life. :D

More updates to follow over the next few days as stuff comes together! :yup:

WTF are you clear coating the polished ali bits :? .........also, doesn't look like you've radiused the bearing/seal bores in the swingarm :?

Yep, indeed. I want the stuff to stay shiny. I'm a lazy git, and some of the parts are hard to reach once the bike is back together, so I chose to clear coat them. If you've been reading some of the posts from me you'll know that this is a special clear coat formulated for non-ferrous, POLISHED metals such as Aluminium or copper or brass. It has it own etching agent. Granted, its an experiment. But I like testing stuff. If it's shit I'll be quite happy to come back and say so. but if it works, we will all have learned something new! ;)

This is news to me... Do you mean chamfer the edge of the bore to avoid the seal being damaged when it's pushed in??

Yes........and dont forget to drill a drain hole if you haven't already.

Properly polished parts need next to no maintainance, whereas even the best clear coat will get stone chipped, allowing moisture to get underneath it = soon looks like dogshit

TA Maz. The drain hole's been done last time I had the swingarm out (thanks to your advice...). Will chamfer the bores now. Almost ready to put the engine back in the frame!

Here's some teaser pics for the picture whores

No new tranny bearings
I do hope that's the 06 pump drive gear ?
Change the crank seal for the later double lipped item
You did seal the stator wiring bung ?

As you've got the clutch off, wot Maz said re. the stator wiring bung.
You'll lose that 'trademark' annoying dribble.
Mind you, I had wondered if this was still a relevant fix, as when I mentioned it in Mojo's crank seal thread in the 'How To' guide, it got removed.
Maybe it's supposed to be a secret.
