My X1 petrol filler cap has always been a bit fiddly. I had the cap flange and rubber boot off lately and when I put them back on the cap is very hard to lock in and unlock.
Has anyone found this problem and a way to improve it?
I wouldn't mind using a non-locking cap, they usually provide more leverage over the mechanism, but I dont know if they are available.
Thanks,
John

TBH i find it best not to lock it
you could take it off and spray WD40 into the keyhole
then work the lock OFF the bike it may free it up

It sounds like you might be having the same problem I had last year.
The sealing/locking mechanism has become worn and it is only a matter of time before the cap stops making a seal and you'll start losing petrol under braking.

A brand new cap (cap only, not the surround that's fixed to the tank) complete with a lock that would still opererate with the original key cost me roughly 35 notes from HD. (I had to supply the VIN to get the key match)

You can get one from the firm that provided Buell with the caps for the S1 for about 20 quid more, but it probably won't have 'Buell' written on it, if that bothers you. http://www.newton-equipment.com/

Please note, these guestimates are based on last year's prices, so expect one hell of a price hike.

EDIT: Come to think of it, I was prepared to pay an extra twenty quid for the Newton item, over the cost of one from HD.
The fact that I ended up getting Harley's quality Taiwanese product must mean that East End cratmanship must have cost between 60 and 70 notes.
Shame on me :oooops:

The caps dont have a lock mech in them ie. any radial pin key will fit and open the cap.

Thanks for that, the spindle has started to spin in the plastic lock, so a new cap is called for.
Thanks again,
John

Think you'll find you've over-tightened the ring of screws securing the seat.......too late now though as the cap's fucked :)

Also......Newton and Taiwanese rip off aren't normally interchangeable without some fettling to the seat.

Also.....the caps are adjustable for fit/seal via the 10mm locknut on the base, new O rings are readily available.

Thanks Maz, I'll pick one up and keep an eye on the adjustable locknut.
Thanks again,

Maz - Do you know whether the bolt spacing for the NEWTON cap ring is standard Newton spec or some Erik special?.

A non-locking Buell alternative would be the cap from a Blast.

I was riding around with a cap from a Strike fitted untill the new one turned up. No fettling required.
I guess I'm just lucky.
