Is there a knack for removing the 5 countersunk bolts which hold the front disc on a s1. I realise they are locktighted in and an attempt with an impact driver had no luck. Rather than try with larger hammer and mash things up I wondered if heat would help or is it too near bearings ,any ideas?

get a steel rod about the same diameter as the screws, put the end of the rod on the screw and hit it pretty hard with a hammer, this usually shocks the thread loose it worked on my M2 when i upgraded!.....

Remove the bearing and get the screws REALLY hot......make sure you use a really good 3/16'' bit and they will come out.

thanks, will twat it with a rod to shock it maybe try and get a bit of heat in it first by leaving a red hot alum key in it to transfer some heat to the lock tight.

No......twating the heads of the screws wont work and heating an allen key will do nowt but soften the key.
I have given you sound advice.......take it or leave it

From the BORG Technical FAQ: "weld a hex nut on the fastener and wait a short time (goodby loctite ... ), then remove the fastener using a suitable sized ring spanner. Weld the removed fastener on the next one and so forth."

EDIT: "hex nut" sounds better to me ...

Cool. After rounding off the socket caps using an impact tool, I drilled mine through the centre using a HSS drill on a milling machine then used an "easy out" to get the remaining thread out. You do need to use a decent pillar drill or milling machine to get the load on the drill, if you don't, it will just blunt itself on the surface of the screw. No damage to paintwork.

hate 2b an arse licker but i took advice and bolts came out a treat,however i placed a heat /frame retardent cloth over bearing area and directed heat away from bearings towards the rim and seemed o'k.although i never put wheels back in as now using different wheels ,so can't be sure bearing's weren't affected ,i'm using Wagon Wheels now as bearing last longer and i get a meal out of the deal too.

Which year are the Wagon Wheels you're using The pre 1980 one were bigger and had more chocolate
