Yet another problem with my Ulysses...

Pulling away from being stopped at a set of lights today and as the bike reached the biting point of the clutch and started to pull away, there was a kind of small 'jolt' from the bike, felt like someone giving the bike a small kick from behind.

WTF? :coat:

I did also notice that the clutch lever needed very little movement to disengage - I'll loosen the cable a bit so the lever has to come back towards to bars more before it disengages the clutch, but could that be related?

Once on the move, no matter what gear, or how slow I was moving, accelerating was smooth and fine - I only managed to replicate the 'jolting' from a stand-still in first gear

As (all too) usual, I'd really appreciate any advice.

Well, could be described as a 'clunk' and seemed to come from 'under' the bike

And a couple of times when it happened it was 2 clunks one after the other.

Is it a transmission jolt or possibly a worn front engine mount with a failed rubber....belts have been known to jump on Ulys with free spirits tensioners....... sounds like the same problem tubers suffer of worn first gear dogs but not heard of that problem with Xb's.

Hey Kevmean

Dunno what you mean by a 'transmission jolt'?

I don't think it's the isolator mount - rubber looks ok to me and sitting high off the bolt head like it should.

Could it be the belt? - it was slack enough to take off the OE pulley to fit the FS Tensioner one without loosening the rear wheel - couldn't see any cracks or wear though?

The 'jolt' only happens when I pull away in first gear quickly from being stopped

Hmm, did a quick search and seems belts do indeed slip in first gear with some people - perhaps tightening the spring on the FS Tensioner (if that's what the problem actually is)?

Any other theories?

OK, so I have adjust the clutch cable but more importantly (I'm guessing) I've adjusted the FS Tensioner

I went for a brief ride this morning before work and couldn't replicate the problem - even gave it the beans from a standing stop and no jolting/clunking/juddering - all seemed fine - well, apart from the front wheel going skywards! Nearly shit myself!

So (perhaps) the belt was/is too loose and was jumping? Maybe time for a new one?

Anyhoo, I'll report back after riding it some more

Not sure whether this is still an issue affecting the XB's, but on the old Tuber's the shoulders on the 1st gear used to wear, so when shifting into 1st, the dogs wouldn't engage properly and only kind of grab it a little. Then, when under load, the shape of the dogs would draw the gears properly together, resulting in a 'jolt'. Had this issue with an M2 engine and my X1 engine and have heard others reporting similar issues. When I pulled my gearbox out the other day 1st gear was worn on the shoulders so I upgraded it with a set of Andrews gears.

I don't however know whether Xb's are affected by this issue. Just to give you a different theory! =)

Yeah I've read about that too

Fingers crossed tightening the tensioner has done the trick

A few more rides will tell
