ok, so today I took the Uly subframe off to 'get to know' what I'll need to do once I have the Lightning subframe adjusted.

Took the whole subframe off and I have to say, barring the absence of a seat, this looks kinda cool...

So anyway, go the subframe on (bear in mind at this point it's attached only by the lower fixings as the upper ones are the ones that need adjusting... moving down and back a bit... cue cutting, welding, whatever...)

And as you can see the shock reservoir will have to be somehow attached underneath...

So here's my idea for repositioning the upper subframe mounts.

Basically need to drill new holes where they mount to the frame, lower by and back a bit indicated by the white circle...

Then I figure drilling a hole further back from the mounting to help secure a bracket like this...

No welding/cutting required. Just fabrication of the bracket and a couple of holes drilling.

I would work on the lower holes cos when you sit on the bike, the upper ones are in tension and the lower ones in compression. Not sure what they look like as a fit at the moment, but you could build the hole up with weld and redrill on a rigid jig or vice. Or you could mill the ends off and weld to drilled ally bar. A compression joint with this sort of fab is a better mode to deal with and safer as if the upper breaks, you will get a tyre mark on your trousers...

Hmm... good point - I guess at the end of the day, if the lower bolts were removed but the upper ones in place the lower fittings 'sit' on top of the frame to take a riders weight, so the seat unit would still be structurally strong enough to take a rider's weight.

Ok, back to the drawing board - I need to figure out how to shift the hole in the lower mounting.

OK, so took Pash's advice and attached the upper mounting first... basically the whole thing goes on easy!

The bottom mount hole doesn't quite line up with the frame lugs, but a slightly thinner bolt, a couple of nuts and some washers and hey presto... Lighning subframe on a Uly, no modding required!

You can see here how I've had to underslung the shock reservoir and adjuster knob (and the brake fluid reservoir) - thank Godness for cable-ties.. need to find a more robust solution though.

Avalaugh,

fitting a lightning rear end to a 1125 will take a bit of work as the mounting points are a little different. Others that have done it have had to make up brackets to fit it. Or there are these -

What I would like to do (money permitting) is to fit the rear end from the 1190R/RS but I suspect that the parts will never be affordable for the common man.

Failing that, if I could find tail end bodywork from something else that I liked, I would get a subframe made up to suit. The Magpul Ronin concept will give you some ideas -
