Just a word about Carole Nash: they quoted me £1300 for 3rd party only.
I then got comprehensive through MCE for £370 8-)

Carole Nash doesn't like Londoners. ;)

I've got a "6 Wheel" policy with them. 2 bikes and one car, £280 Fully Comp. 8-)

(But maybe 30 years without a claim helps ;) )

In 2008I went to Lagos in Portugal on it and used it daily down there for a month. Did over 5000 miles on it. Performed faultlessly...

As Ash said, check your insurance is extended to cover you abroad. If you insure thru a broker get them to check with insurer. Some will only give you the minimum req'd by law in the country you are travlin to, in the case of France thats only a type of third party (i think) so if your wheels were torched or snaffled by monsewer le scumbag you lose.

250 miles each way on a uly, that's just a short hop ;) lOl

As Robin says, you're having a laff. :o

On the Glencoe run last year, my first day's mileage was more than 500 miles lOl

I've done plenty of 1000 mile long weekends on the Uly, no bother.

Bretagne's a great start for touring, but believe me, the whole of Europe's waiting. 8-)

Ok.. for the last anxiety test, is this sort of fraying ok for a belt?

As you know I had a belt go on my Uly in Germany very recently. It took the local HD dealer 5 days to get a replacement.
I'm off to the Continent again next monrth and I'm seriously thinking of getting a spare belt - and working out a way of lifting the back wheel - and practising the belt change at home - before setting out - with tools etc.
Having said all that - I went to the South of France and back last year - absolutely no probs - Uly went a treat.
The offer of a spare belt and luggage is bloody great! Even if you can't do the repair yourself - you could save yourself a long wait in the middle of nowhere!
How about developing a UK BEG Spare Belt Scheme - financed & maintained by members?
I'm working on an inflatable ball idea to lift the bike fractionally - lightweight/low tech - could work? Will let you know how the experiment goes.

Can change the belt on the side stand, just need a torx for the chin fairing and sprocket cover, an Allen keys for axle clamp and brace plus spanner to drive the double hex and a socket for the tensioner fork.

My spare belt is available for the cost of postage and the promise to return it as soon as you get home...

What's wrong with just pulling the bike onto the side stand and getting a mate to hold it? Or lob a couple of bricks under the swinging arm? Or use a ratchet strap hooked from the pillion peg hanger, over the seat to something convenient?

Nothing wrong with any of that I guess!

I'll try em out and see how it goes.

Still like the inflatable ball idea - no idea if it'll work or not though!

Just remember when carrying a spare belt not to twist or crimp it too tightly in your luggage, as a guide don't fold any tighter than the front pulley size, a piece of cardboard tube approx that diameter inserted in the folds would be a good idea.

Picture taken this noon as we came back (soaked, of course) from a quick 4-day, 1200 mls trip to the Alps. As you will notice, we even got a Buell with us, which can not be said from every UKBEG trip ;) If you take a close look you will see an easy way how to carry a spare belt with you. In this case a used one, because easier to install.
