Is there any way I can quieten down the exhaust on my firebolt just for a few minutes, without having to remove it as it's a bugger to get the straps back on. It's an Albert can and I want to make it quiet so I can get a sound recording of the engine noises it's making to try and help diagnose the problems, haven't got the tools or space to check the output shaft bearing at the moment.

Ps what's the name of the buell specialist in Northampton, and how good are they? Trustworthy to strip the engine and fix whatever's wrong?

Only tools you need are a T27 to remove the pulley cover (to be found in the bikes tool roll) and a hammer + screwdriver to remove the plug seal.

Wouldn't the Brillo pads/wire wool need to be put in from the engine side of the can?

You just want to quieten it for minute or so, so you could ram some cardboard up the chuff then hook it out when finished.

Wire wool works too , same as brillo pads really or get a mate to put a gloved hand over the outlet , briefly and not too tightly or next doors cat that keeps leaving little presents in my flower beds , I would happily stuff it up your exhaust pipe .

Don't actually have a hammer had the cover off though and can't see what it is I'm supposed to take out, have I got to remove the pulley aswell? It's very rusty. Will give black bear a thought, but need new tensioner bearings fitted (again, 3rd time in 10,000 miles!) so northants vtwin makes more sense for that.

Black bear could be handy for the 20,000 miles service, on 18,500 at the moment, and it missed the 15,000, very surprised it's not gone bang yet!

Its right in the centre of the rusty pulley wheel ,
if you press the centre it should be soft , rubber covered ,
push a screwdriver gently through it
then lever it out ,
just done mine to fit the Maz grease nipple mod .

Well I found the tool box and it seems I've acquired a hammer somewhere. So I got home from work this morning and took the cover off (eventually, all the bolts were incredibly tight), but when I got the cover off I realised I didn't know how to re-seal it after putting a screwdriver through it. And secondly, the front pulley was really hot, too hot to touch, after riding no more than 7 miles. Does that seem normal?

Might have only been 7 miles, but with a heat source of greater than 1,000 degrees just a few inches away, and metal being a pretty good conductor, it's probably normal

You need a grease nipple conversion , as fitted by Maz , ace bit of kit , there is a section in the 'how to' bit of this forum with pictures and everything .

Well I managed to get the plug out yesterday and the bearing looked ok to me, but not sure what I'm looking for, looked well oiled, here's a pic not sure how good it is...

Hmm bugger image too big and I'm not sure how to resize on my phone.
Need to take the pulley cover off again as maz said to check and see if there was any movement there, anyone know if I have to remove the belt to do that?

If your really unlucky you will feel the movement with the belt on.
