Are you sure that the sequence wasn't in reverse ...ie over revved ......dropped / bent a vlave damaging valves etc which stripped the drive gear ? ...........................my X1 stripped a brand new pump drive gear after a piece of broken valve spring jammed the cam gears ;)

;) Yep correct as usual....................scavenge gears jammed stripping oil pump drive and the debri from that broke all the cam gears .....................it's all coming back to me now ...............I've been traumatised by the cost ever since lOl lOl ..................and my memorys not so good (it's the age thing again) lOl lOl

But just saying that a damaged oil pump drive could be the cause OR the effect lOl

Can't say for UK bikes, but german bikes of model year 2003/04 typically had a oil pump gear failure around 10k mls or allmost never at all. Rumours are the crankshafts were even a worse P.O.S. as they are now, but no one knows for sure and there's much guessing and assuming. It can be safely stated though, that every engine whose crankshaft was carefully aligned never ran into a oil pump gear problem again. Another option is to get one of those indestructible aftermarket gears available over here.

Unfortunately, HD have done their utmost to stop their American dealers from selling abroad ...

Jersey HD may be your cheapest option - but always get a price from another dealer as they are not always the cheapest, regardless of what their website states re being VAT free ...

Old drive gear is 26318-88A
New drive gear (bronze - pictured below) is 26391-06

Image

Note that the old drive gear has been used by Sportsters since 1988 (the 88A means revision A of a part introduced in 1988) and you don't see much complaint of them failing there.

Oil pump changed in 2007 to 26357-02B which doesn't necessarily mean there was a change to the design as I am told you can go from A to B to C with changes in manufacturers.

Legend has it that the Uly has a bigger oil pump, however it shares the same part number as above for 2007, the last year of this engine configuration.

Check with Gunter where you can get hold of the indestructible drive gear, it is a thing of beauty with no sharp edges like the Buell one. When my other projects are out of the way, the Firebolt will be having one.

This is such good news. I have done 25,000 on my Buell and now I find out that there is a little time bomb in my oil circulation system... nice. If this is a known fault why didnt HD do a recall because it is just oh so slightly dangerous dont you think. I mean "lunching the engine" on a v-twin at speed ! They obviously know there is a problem so they produced a better version of the gear are they waiting for somebody to die and then get sued maybe. Any other little nasties I aught to be aware of ? Part of the reason I bought the Buell besides its quirky styling handling and character was because I thought the sporster engine was a tried and tested workhorse that had been around for years and had all the faults ironed out !
