Ash, how long would you say you are running it full choke, and about how long overall with any amount of choke?
Just as your XB needed a proper warmup before it smooths(ed) out at normal operating temp's, your carb'ed bike needs the time it needs - which I've found to be a fair amount longer than needed for my XB.

Hardenthefuckup - it's a proper bike ;) . Once upon a time all bikes were like this lOl

You'll get used to it. Don't plod it around at low revs when cold, if you need to do slow manouevers, keep the clutch covered with a finger or two, and fan it like you would with a two stroke to keep it in the 'powerband' pulling out of a slow corner.
Try riding the bike at walking pace, feet up, in second gear on the flat, and you'll see what I mean lOl

And the real ones still are. :old: Bloody Fuel Injection - Grrrrrrrr.

The Guzzi can come off choke after about 10s. In summer Just a couple of throttle twists and no choke required.

You watch - Ash'll be off watching ball games instead of discussing these matters of lore over a pint next

I used to give my M2 three good squirts of the throttle before starting from cold, full choke, prod the starter, let the bike tick over, as the tick over speed increases push the choke in gently, 'til the tick over slows, repeat until the choke is all the way home... another minute or so on tick over then a few revs and take off.......... No problem :yup:

With the standard carb it occasionally used to give off an almighty bang when starting engine warm/hot. But no problems with the Mik. If you need to do slow turns early in the journey, warm it properly first.

I still miss my M2

Same here, Adam is also right you have to ride it like a stroker for a few miles, ie use the clutch!! Getting up 5 minutes early and warming it up is a small price to pay for the grin factor. See if you can fix something to the ground where you start it to stop it moving backwards

I use a jubilee clamp around the handgrip holding the front brake lever when parking on a slope....

 A ziptie might be rather kinder to your grips and lever! :old:
I used to keep one of those promotional key fobs of the printed plastic strip variety in my pocket for that purpose, the ring fitted nicely over the bar-end, no tools required

A ziptie cut in to the grip more, being thinner, I should've pointed out I put a small piece of underlay between the clamp and the grip.

Maybe 3 out of every 5 starts I get a huge back fire from the pipe when starting from cold which wakes half the street at 7 in the morning, why might this be,
Not sure, but at a guess I'd say the other half are already up. :D
