the handling on the S3 is massively more rapid and precise, feels more like riding a 125 in comparison. the uly is much easier to use round town as you have no weight on your hands, but it does cook your right thigh if you spend much time in traffic, i dont find the clutch to be an issue.

I'm very surprised that you find the S3 better in that respect ...generally whether you love them or not the XB range handles better and is more nimble than the tubers ...maybe changing your suspension has upset your ully or maybe it just needs setting up correctly but i'd say it should def be more nimble than the S3.

He's spot on there. I took the S2 out a couple of weeks ago after using the Uly almost exclusively for the last six months and the overriding impression is of better fuelling (Mikuni), sharper steering, much greater stability and compactness. The S2/S3 is little different to the S1/X1 except in riding position. It's just the bodywork that gives the impression of extra size.
The Uly is a big comfy thing that is great to spend a day in (particularly if your legs stretch to the tall seat) but it is pretty soft and the high and wide riding position makes it feel significantly less stable at higher speeds. You have to be very careful not to hang on too tight once you get above 85 or so.
A fantastic all-rounder nonetheless.......as long as you can keep it in wheel bearings! I use it for distance work and going to Sainsburys!

Excellent...!!! Don't usually do less than 100 miles per ride as it seems a shame to make the effort to get the bike out for less!!! Plus just love riding.... :yup:

i have an 06 XB12X which I got of a fellow forum member 3 years ago and its on 19k miles...and still as new!
only had a belt snapped after tyre change - which was probably the cause - other than that no problems at all...

Hi there Emmet,
I have an '06 Ulysses, '07 registered, I love it. It's perfect for quick blasts around the countryside. It doesn't like slow traffic otherwise I have no complaints. My list of jobs when I bought it were, wheel bearings, Maz grease nipple mod, right hand air scoop, resolder wire in loom at headstock (trip meter kept resetting), earth cable directly from battery to engine, engine breather mod, clean 77 connector and grease if it's an 06 or 07 model. One other problem is the wires in the fuel pump on early models can rub and short out, it means emptying the petrol out and removing the pump, covering the wires where the are cutting and putting it back together. This is one job I haven't done yet.
If you are able to run a race bike you will have no bother keeping the Uly going. Most of the jobs are easy.
Heading up to Cookstown myself next Saturday, I'll be keeping an eye out for you, good luck and safe racing :yup:

Love my Uly - have had 3 plus 2 city X's over the years (various back problems plus general fickle-ness with my choice of bikes)

My current Uly has been 'bombered' - lightning tail, rental bars and removed screen and beak, basically.

Apart form a slipping clutch (which Tubbs seems to have currently fixed) I've really had no major issues with any of the 5 Buells I've owned, other than small things like wheel bearings (piece of cake to change) and a seized isolator bolt on my last City X.

I have a 50 mile round-trip commute each day and alternate with my Uly and my GS. Had this one for a year, had my previous one for 2.5 years... they never let me down.

while going over them the other day i noticed that the uly tyre pressures were low ( 32/37 ) - putting them back to 36/42 improved it significantly, but the S3 still turns easier with almost no physical input; its as though it gets bored with straight lines. part of it might be the difference in the way you ride a supermoto styled bike - the steering input is different with high wide bars to conventional bikes where you have a bit of weight on your arms.

i did wonder whether the uly's handling had been upset by lowering it, but its not bad, ( with the tyre pressures correct ), just different. i've never ridden anything that wanted to turn as easily as the S3 does though.
