Hi, sorry to be a bother, but do any of you technical wizards know the tensile rating of the
bolt which fastens the rear shocker to the swingarm? Bike is a 2007 Uly. Top bolt is rated 8.8 but
is larger in diameter than the bottom bolt.

I would think it would be a grade 8. If you are not buying the standard HD bolt why not get a zinc plated 12.9 in the same size?

Harley item because I needed a longer bolt.

Hmm, is that an SAE Grade 8? That is equivalent to an ISO Class 10.9, but an ISO Class 8.8 is an SAE Grade 5. Probably fine, the parts book doesn't mention the grade, but o would be looking for a 10.9 min.

Are you sure the top bolt is not an SAE Grade 8 and not a Class 8.8?

Top bolt has 8.8 stamped into it Pash. I've been doing a bit of checking round and according the the BS standard 8.8 high tensile steel has a shear strength of 50000 psi.

The bolt is M8 which is roughly a third of an inch.... third of 50000 is around 16 and a half thousand psi....even taking into account my shaky calculations there should be around 10 to twelve thousand psi in the bolt.... so... bike loaded up, 2 riders... 700 to 900 lbs.... 2 axles... so maybe 450 lbs on the rear wheel I'd have to subject it to around 20g's of pressure to even approach the strength of the bolt.... I cant think of a situation that might happen.... unless It's launched off a cliff...
