I think I'll stick with Sport Trans.
In all the hundreds of thousands of miles that I've ridden on bikes, the Buell clutch has been the best by far. I've never had to adjust it or replace any part of it, except for a cable. :yup:

My question was raised as an alternative, for instance, we may not live near a HD dealership and it may be easier to source alternatives closer to home.

You could extend the question as to what is wrong with using HDB bearings rather than sourcing SKF or similar, or OE tyres. blah blah blah.

And there are some on this forum that want to boycot HD products.

Silkolene is a quality manufacturer, I wouldn't think you would be buying twice if you used their specified product.

What about ATF?. Just a thought, as a fair few manual boxes now use ATF.

The real issue at a guess is the clutch - less so the gears and chain.

But then if ATF can cope with an Auto box lock-up clutch in a Jag (whatever) then I doubt a Buell clutch is going to slip.

Think there is a JASO standard for oils that are clutch friendly, that being the difference between a car 10w40 and a bike 10w40 - the majority of jap bikes use one oil for engine, gearbox and clutch.

Maybe we are over complicating things here...

As for ATF, all my two strokes used that in the gearbox with no clutch issues...

What do you use in your Moto Guzzi Chris?

I've just put ATF in my TY trials bike gearbox :D . Most people who use Norton/AMC type gearboxes on Pre '65 scramble bikes use Castrol R. Used it for many years in my JAP/Enfield with no problems at all; the box is like new inside :yup:
When used in motors (esp Methanol burners) legend has it, that at the point of seizure, the 'R' goes all gummy and protects the piston skirt from scuffing (although ring lands need frequent cleaning) - one reason why so many old Comp bikes still use it, despite all the technology in modern synthetic stuff.

Many put the same 20W50 in engine and trans. Those who do (mostly badweb types) tend to use synthetic (Amsoil, Royal Purple, Mobil1, etc), so no real cost savings there.

I guess that's an advantage when the crank oil seal blows, though :run:

Been using Morris lubricants V Twin oil, but so far used only the Hardley tranny oil but would happily use something else if i knew what to get :oooops:

Been nagged at to try the ATF in the LC gearbox too !!

This has been an interesting thread and feck off the bullies who try and stop the oil talk :ner:
