my oil changes are based on my years with laverds ,first lav 1975 3C ,perchased with 20k on the clock ,VERY VERY tired by 68k ,work was 12 miles away 6 days a week ,it lived between 5 & 7000 RPM plus them six days ,oil came out every 1500 miles ,crank went for a rebiuld at 68k in 88 ,returned ok no rebild needed ,needs to be known they are fully rolling element cranks ,no plain bearings at all ,how many of you run your engines long enough to release the moisture in the oil ;) what do you think that creamy gunge is in your derby cover ,emulsefied oil (oil with water in it because the oil hasnt been hot long enough to fully release the water in it ,very impresive what water does to short trip gearboxs using the same oil as the engine )

Good points there WILLYBUELL. Another issue is that the action of gears breaks down the polymer chains in oils? I read somewhere that this is why the first Minis with their combined engine gearboxes mashed the old style oils originally used, which advanced the development of multigrade oils. ;)

I confess to probably wasting money on gear oil changes on my Buell as I am fortunate in rarely having to do short rides. However, I am also slightly paranoid about the HD Sportster derived motor, which has a reputation (real or exagerated) for knocking out gearboxes. :roll:

Still, someone out there must know more about gear oil alternatives for Buells or why Formula+ is so good....or if HD Synth (or anyone elses) is better? :?

Apart from the output shaft bearing (and maybe the 5th gear needle roller), what other gearbox issues are there?

.....when my XB was newer the gearbox drain plug magnet was regularly covered in granuals of cheese! lOl

This has 'worn off' a bit with miles (literally)! :? Like where do these bits come from? :? If it was a Jap it would have been written off! :shock:
