.......to all you carb'd Buell owners......if you're gonna leave your bike unridden for more than a couple of hours, it's VERY important to turn the fuel tap off
Why?
Never done that in all the years I've had mine.
Snot rocket science Garry......if the tap is left on the only thing holding back the contents of the fuel tank is the needle and seat in the carbs float chamber.
Best case scenerio is that as the fuel in the float bowl evaporates, it then refills and then evaporates again etc. etc......so over a period of time the tank empties gradually.
Worse case scenario.....the needle and seat get stuck open via debris or crystal build up and then the entire tanks contents are free to flow through the carb into the manifold, past whichever valve is open and then into the sump via the piston rings.
So if you park the bike up over winter say, with a gallon + of fuel in the tank, this fuel would eventually end up in the sump......if you're lucky the bike will start up but the oil system is now overwhelmed with piss thin/diluted lube that'll not only blow the tank cap into orbit but will also destroy bearings etc......if you're unlucky the cylinders will hydraulic lock and bend conrods etc.......and all because you couldn't be arsed/forgot to turn the petcock off
aprill 84 running a steady 90 on a long right hander on an 80 big valve JOTA ,bloody elle ,engine lost power couple o strange thuds ,pull over bikes running at 2000 and sounds REALY sick ,kill bike look around ,hmmmmm starters at a funny angle ,starter mounting plate is busted ,pull starter to rear of bike 40MM hole in the cases NO 3 rods let go,lucky for me when i stripped it piston had stopped low enough for the vaves to open but the stub o rod on the big end visted the sunshine out the rear of the crankcase and punched a hole in the starter toooo ,on inspection the rod was only held together buy about a third of its cross section due to preveious damage from hydraulcing ,from this experence we deduced from the first time your engine hydrualics it HAS become a long fused grenade ,SWITCH OFF
