I've got this friend who runs a 08 spec XB12X and he wants to know what the expected lifespan of his XB engine is likely to be. To date, it's covered 19,500 miles without any problems but paranoia is setting in :? .....

Since 1983 all Buells have been unreliable, high maintainance, bags o' shite....some will call this character, enthusiasts bikes, whatever.....the difference is that anyone with a pair of molegrips and a basic understanding of motorcycle maintainance could spanner a Buell up until the advent of Buells 1st disposeable 'Bic Razor' model in 2003.
Half the fun of owning a tuber is keeping it on the road......this process will continue indefinitely because it's cheap and easy to do 8-)

Classic. So with the XB it's evil corporatism and callous unwillingness to build a decent bike. With a tuber, it's all jolly good Famous Five-style fun.

Wish you could hear yourself, sometimes, Maz.

Can't see that it's anything to do with being 'evil' or 'callous', it's just plain economics. Many companies are 'guilty' of this. For example, Karrimor, North Face and Berhaus etc used to produce top notch quality outdoor kit, these days they just produce crap which is barely adequate for going shopping in - yet the punters still buy it.
What is there to argue about when you have to change XB and 1125 wheelbearings every other tyre change (I've even made my own tool for 'drawing' them in without damage) and I'd much rather spend an afternoon sorting a gearbox than having to completely strip a motor - after all gearbox problems are not unheard of.
Cut me in half and you'd have Buell enthusiast written through me but that doesn't mean I have to bury my head in the sand and dismiss facts for fear of being branded disloyal.
I've got no axe to grind as I own a XB as well ;)

Paranoia is a good word for the anxiety you can get if you take the board too seriously.
