I have converted my X1 to run on a carb using the R+R Customizing kit , it seems to have a flat spot between 3500 to 4000 revs before and after seem ok . Has any one done this conversion or had similar problems , the carb runs great outsde this area ,any ideas?

How is the ignition controlled?

I suspect Pash may be on the money, but have you tried raising the needle or using a different taper?

Depends whether it is at WOT or part throttle, which he doesn't say... Lifting the needle at WOT will do nothing, but if it is a flat spot from wrenching the throttle open, it could be an accelerator pump nozzle far too large or too small...

Hi Guys, the ignition is standard RRC sugest in their kit that you retard the ignition by 2.5 to 5 degrees by turning the plate couterclockwise , i have tried a few vairiations but this just seems to make the bike worse , it doesent matter if you go quick or slow the problem is still there. The carb works fine i have changed the pilot jet to a 25 was 30 and altered float hieght to lean off pluss mixture screw this improved the general running but the problem still remains

Quite right, I assumed it was flat during normal 'winding on'. I assume the Carb is a Mikuni, but I've seen things from Amals (needed boring out) to Del Ortos fitted

Yes it is a Mikuni flatside , i was thinking more ignition because the black box used to controll that department but now it runs on the carb does it need a different ignition the RRC solution seems a bit of a slege hammer blow

Yes, different ignition required IMO......without TPS input the ecm gets a bit confused :)

Personally, I'd have stuck with the FI.....why do peeps put a carb on ?

Thanks maz i new someone would know yourself being that person, i put the carb on because i understand them better than the fuellers but i like the X1 looks. So if i replace the ignition with something like a single fire crane system this will cure the problem or do i need any other parts .

Have the same set up on my X1 and it runs perfectly fine . Retarded timing 2.5 degrees and removed and blanked off exhaust lambda , same with rear cylinder head sensor and air flow sensor . IMHO it has stacks more bottom end grunt at the expense of a bit of economy which i'm not bothered about .

I am a big fan of modern fuel injection, esp on big singles and twins where you can get a much wider usable powerband. Still, plenty older designs can either be a bit jerky under low engine load, slowly responding in pick-up or take long to settle down when closing the throttle. The X1 in standard setup is the only bike I know that combines all three of these drawbacks in one handy package lOl
Still, an X1 feels definitely quicker in my experience at motorway speeds than my M2-Thunderstorm, despite the little difference in power on paper (Buell power on paper is pure myth anyway ;) ) .
It's also worth trying to modify the injection, a friend of mine had most of the gremlins on his X1 sorted by an expert (not cheap and easy though).

Hope this one comes up its the 2nd try my rear header sensor is already blanked off and so is the air filter sensor not sure about the head temp but i think that was knocked out by the guys at RRC when they moded the black box. I think i will try a new ignition pos Dyna with the VOES .

I'd suggest reinstating the head temp sensor ....................save going back to the old days of melting rear pistons ;)
