Hi Guys,

I'm having a bit of a nightmare with the Uly this weekend, and was wondering if anyone can help my diagnose the problem?

Yesterday I rode down to Portishead for a stag do, as I arrived the red engine warning light came on. I was a bit late so I parked up and decided to look at it when we'd finished the first activity. 2 hours later I turned the ignition back on and the engine check light went out, but there wasn't enough battery power left to crank the engine. I figured I must have left the side lights on and borrowed a jump pack to get me going. I made it a couple of miles down the road before running out of electricity.

I then found out that my breakdown cover doesn't cover motorbikes, and after being financially raped for a £150 recovery fee I had a 3 hour wait for SOS-direct motorcycle recovery.

The chap who turned up did some quick checks, and the battery seemd to have recovered a little, at least enough to run the bike after a jump start, but it wasn't being charged. He reckoned it wasn't the regulator/rectifier because the battery voltage was slowly dropping irrespective of the engine revs - but I know almost nothing about bike electrical systems so I don't really know what he means (searching the forum last night hasn't helped me much either).

This morning I connected ECM spy and retrieved the following faults:

Battery voltage too low - Presumably from running out of electricity?
Air temp too high/short to ground - Could this be insufficient electricity to run the cooling fan?
AMC stuck open - ?
AMC short to ground - ?

The bike was hooked up to the battery optimiser all night and was still trickle charging (it's a 1 month old gell battery). Just now I hooked up a voltmeter across the battery terminals, reading 12.4 volts with ignition on, dropping to about 9v during cranking, then when started it rose to 12.2v I tried reving the engine and the voltage dropped to about 11.5v, and stayed low through the whole rev range. The voltage just dropped at a rate of 0.1v every 10 seconds or so. I turned it off at 10.8 volts after about 5 minutes. The red engine light had also cleared overnight, but was on when we ran the engine to ride it into the back of the recovery van last night.

So what checks can I do to work out which component has failed? Diodes/Stator/Connectors?

Any advice will be appreciated.

Cheers

Simon

And just in case it turns out to be the connector melted.
