I was only basing my post on what you say above, which you have said before.
Are the 00 M2 cranks not the same through to 02? And are they not the same as the X1/S3? And are the M2 and X1 engines the same build apart from the carb and ignition? And hence the potential for failure is the same for these cranks? Surely the difference of one or two degrees of advance between cylinders and more accurate fuelling is not enough to make the cranks last longer in an X1/S3?
Lost of questions unanswered of what is likely to fail and when. For instance the oil pump drive gear remained the same from 1988 until 2006, but failures only seem to be common in 2003/2004 bikes (apart from a recent tuber failure), perhaps a bad batch but enough for HD to redesign it. Were there lost of failures on Sportsters in that year or did Buell get all the bad ones?
I recently changed the oil pump drive gear on my Firebolt, which was fitted with the earlier gear. The wear on it after 13k miles was almost unnoticeable, however the wear on the one which came from my S1 a few thousand miles older was significantly more, maybe 25% of the tooth thickness had gone. And I am sure this is one of those checks you get when you have a
service rather than a main dealer following the service schedule.
