It will simply demonstrate how much of the big end bearing has passed through/trashed the scavenge side of the oil pump and made it back to the tank, before being recirculated through/trashing the pressure side of the pump and contaminating the oil cooler before the filter picked it up :)

Blimey, what can you do to avoid that happening or is it just inevitable?

Your engine already has the updated oil pump drive gear as it came from a Uly IIRC

Plenty of high mileage XBs on this forum, so worry no need.

The front big end is also a popular failure on 00 and later tubers, and the effect will be the same, so it is not just the Bic razor XBs... And since XB Lightnings are fetching over 3k it probably makes more sense to fix them than X1s and M2s that generally don't top that threshold.

You must know more than me then Pash.......for some unknown reason I've only ever seen this type of failure on M2's :? .........but they're worth fixing because they're real Buells  .......seriously though, I've seen far more failures with the XB range, plus they also seem to like throwing their pistons away between the crank flywheels :?
The Germans may be stupid enough to pay good money for XB's but the tubers are now fetching really good money too...... I reckon Buells future is in the used tuber market

I was only basing my post on what you say above, which you have said before.

Are the 00 M2 cranks not the same through to 02? And are they not the same as the X1/S3? And are the M2 and X1 engines the same build apart from the carb and ignition? And hence the potential for failure is the same for these cranks? Surely the difference of one or two degrees of advance between cylinders and more accurate fuelling is not enough to make the cranks last longer in an X1/S3?

Lost of questions unanswered of what is likely to fail and when. For instance the oil pump drive gear remained the same from 1988 until 2006, but failures only seem to be common in 2003/2004 bikes (apart from a recent tuber failure), perhaps a bad batch but enough for HD to redesign it. Were there lost of failures on Sportsters in that year or did Buell get all the bad ones?

I recently changed the oil pump drive gear on my Firebolt, which was fitted with the earlier gear. The wear on it after 13k miles was almost unnoticeable, however the wear on the one which came from my S1 a few thousand miles older was significantly more, maybe 25% of the tooth thickness had gone. And I am sure this is one of those checks you get when you have a :maz: service rather than a main dealer following the service schedule.

Over here pump drive gears were failing in tubers not less than in XB models, otherwise the [ad]unbreakable oil pump gear by http://www.LuckyHands.de[/ad] would not exist. It was originally made to fix a tuber problem, before the XB series were brought to market in 2003.

Oil pump drive failures have been reported in Germany with any of the OEM gears until 2008. The golden ones wear too, seemingly only a bit slower:
http://ecmspy.com/download/gunter/images/pict1852.jpg <-- from my 2004 XB12, removed after I bought it, gear had been in use less than 6k mls

Interesting that Jims and S&S don't produce aftermarket crank pins for 00 and newer cranks.

Cheers pash; it also has the free spirits tensioner so hopefully with regular oil changes I should be ok. Do I need the nipple mod with my 07 motor as well?
