Hi Guys,

My friend has an S1 Lightning. The bike is about 12 years old but is immaculate as you will see below after I resprayed it.

Image

Last year the paint on the tank developed blisters so I stripped it off, treated the it with a plastic sealer and resprayed it as in the photo above. This year, during the last hot spell it developed blisters again. Has anyone else come across this problem and if so, how did you get round it?

a common problem , due to the cheapo plastic the tank is made from :headbang:
leaving the cap partially lifted helps apparently , have a search it's been chatted about a lot

that's why X1 has a separate cover over the tank

Try these:

viewtopic.php?f=8&t=14634

viewtopic.php?f=8&t=14494

viewtopic.php?f=8&t=13745

And plenty more if you search for combinations of tank/paint/letters/bubble/lift etc.

I got a metmachex on mine with a hugger. I thought it was an S1 one as it sits a bit higher than normal due to the thicker swinging arm. Infact I have also got the PM rear caliper as well.

Thanks for your replies guys.
My friend has tried to get an ally replacement but the price is horrendous. I'm going to try coating the tank in glass fibre or carbon fibre and see if that will fix it.

The carbon fibre skin is what I plan to try if I ever get some free time.

Try these two guys, I've personaly had dealings with them, and although they are predominantly car Guys, they may be able to help.
I don't know if they'll be interested in bike tanks, but worth a try.
I have some of the "Art" at home, and I don't know how anyone can make what these guys make out of a flat sheet of aluminium!

If I had the time, I'd love to go on one of their 'English Wheel' courses 8-)

It's on my bucket list.
Geoff made some lovelly stuff for my Super Seven, and I really enjoy having a cuppa with him when I'm down that way.
I was on Holiday in Cornwallshire last November, and popped in to say hello with my Wife. Even she loved the Guy to bits. Such a mellow laid back Guy.
You can tell he just loves what he does.
But I know that once I spend a week there, I'll want to buy an English wheel, and a TIG welder, but untill I've built my workshop I have nowhere to put it!

I've been waiting nearly a year for Mr Tank Shop Williams to get my mantra tank in aluminum out to me, but he appears to think leaving the country for 6 mths on his own endeavours without letting his customers know is good and acceptable business practices, of course we have yet to discuss this upon his return to UK. A man of many promises without the following through with the goods. :headbang:

Oh on a secondary note if you have any joy with a glass cover, I would be interested.
The main problem area I can forsee is getting a nice finish around the flush filler cap, so it retains a flush finish, rather than being sunken and a potential water pool in wet weather.

Maybe a spacer ring could be made to raise the filler so it is flushe with the new surface ;)
