I've been trying to slacken the rear wheel wheel spindle on my Firebolt and it appears to be seized solid. The bike had a new rear tyre fitted about 8 months ago so it obviously came off then. I've undone the pinch bolt but cant shiftthe spindle. I've sprayed releasing oil all around it each night for several days. Tonight I had the spindle tool in with a spanner on it and beat the crap out of it but it still won't move.

Any suggestions would be gratefully received and there may be a beer in it if somebody suggests something that works.

Thanks.

Mine was a bit like that the first time I took the back wheel out. I'd use a good quality 3/8" socket on a solid bar, with the biggest cheater bar you can get hold of, and a friend to hold the bike while you jump up and down on it (the cheater bar that is).

If you ever do get it off, put some copaslip on the axle before reassembly ;)

I can't remember for sure but is the rear spindle on the XB a left hand thread? ..... If the spindle is seized that bad be very careful you don't spread the swingarm when it does start to undo ..... the best idea is to place a ratchet strap around the swingarm through the wheel otherwise it is possible to even break the swingarm depending on where the spindle is seized. Was the spindle coated in good quality copper grease last time it was out ? if not that will be the reason you are now having problems , copper grease is your friend and decent dealers like BB always make sure spindles etc are copper greased.

You want an 1/2" drive on something like an axle ;)

No, that's the front one :P

I'd hazard a guess that it's seized on the right hand side where the pinch bolts grip. (I'm basing that on my experience, but I could be wrong, it's not unheard of lOl )

That's quite reassuring actually, at least I wasn't giving the wrong advice (apart from the drive size) If there was another way I'm sure you'd have found it by now lOl

The above was after heating the LH (threaded side) to nearly melting point lOl ......it's always the threads that seize but as someone already said, be aware that if the bearing inner races are seized on the axle, it's very easy to spread the swingarm, which will fracture the central weld of the oil tank = it will empty its contents all over the tyre

I used to bang on about the need to regularly undo and re-torque the spindles to keep them from seizing (this assumes they're already well copperslipped etc) but these days I just cant be arsed......keeps me amused and I get my monies worth out of Snap-On lOl

Thanks all
Off to buy another socket bar as I snapped mine.

I would have copper slipped it but the tyre was put on by the local dealer. I thought they would but should have checked it at te time.

..........and use the real Coppaslip (expensive) because it stays as a paste. The cheap copper grease (like Comma etc) dries out to almost a powder and gets all claggy.

As Kev say's, if ya try and undo the axle while the bearings are seized on the axle you will splay the swing arm and do damage, put a ratchet strap around the swing arm and slowly turn the axle while hitting the swing arm/axle with a rubber mallet, this normally works for me, also use only Copaslip by the moly slip company on re assembly
