It is worse when the boss has no experience at all so daren't or can't admit experience is a good thing because he would then be admitting he can't do the job himself.

You won't be able to. All my uncles are/were like this bloke but they are all late 70's or in their 80's. They aren't able to do much now but they can tell you how it should be done. My old man was an instructor in the technical college at Rolls-Royce after over 25 years in the machine shop and he predicted this would happen when they cut the apprenticeships to two years and also with the advent of the CNCs (which he thought were great) he just knew that the solid base in engineering and the practical skills would be diminished and eventually lost.

:yt: Precisely what my Old Boy said, he was an 'Old School' Engineer who started as a 14 messenger boy for the GPO and became the Chief Exec Engineer for BT.

He doesn't overly have a can do attitude, you have to kick him up the arse because he would gladly do nowt.
Cnc's wrecked training, management saw the opportunity to de-skill engineering and in the majority of cases this works great because with cad cam software almost anything can be done quite easily, it's progress and that's the way it is and I generally like it.

I think you will find no one being dumped on the scrap heap over 65 anymore, my understanding of employment rules is that no one can be retired by their employer anymore, it's their choice when they finish now.

I served my apprenticeship as a centre lathe turner working on lathes upto 60 foot long and I loved it, I was lucky enough to be involved with some of the first cnc machines and was lucky enough to learn these skills when things were still done properly, the money just isn't in the job to do it right these days, it's that simple.

You're right now one can be retired now as you say it's up to them but about having to kick him up the arse he's 65 by rights he should be retired but unfortunately that's not the case what I love about people of that age is that their knowledge of their work and of their lives is absolutely priceless so please don't kick him too hard or just give him a cushion beforehand

That old boy is irreplaceable

Apart from seeing one of these in front of the local bike shop when they were new back in the day and fancying one, I have no affinity at all to them, infact I've never ridden one before today, it was worth the wait 8-) 8-) 8-)
