Hi Guys,

I ride my Uly year-round and suffer from the ususal wet-weather electrical woes. But I recently blew a dipped beam bulb and noticed an improvement in cranking the bike over and reduced wet weather ignition issues - like the start-up has more power, and the occassional dropping of a cylinder in the wet seems to have gone!

Could this be due to a reduced load on the electrical system? I run an 'Extreme' bulb which claims to be 90% brighter than a standard Halogen H7 - could this be crippling my electrics?

If this is the case - has anyone tried (or got any opinion on) an LED-cluster H7 bulb? These claim to be low power but high output!

Cheers

Simon

If a blown bulb has an effect on cranking, sounds like you battery is a bit tired (or your earthing of battery connections are loose or corroded).

Our LED light expert is Chris(Madrid), but he is away for a bit.

I have a Simpson Detour conversion on my Uly which won't help you much as it powers two 55W bulbs. Much better than the standard set up. Welcome to ride over and see them.

An alternative is to use HIDs, but they can be very annoying to other drivers.

Thanks Pash,

Battery is 5 weeks old - it's a gel-type one

The simpson detour unit looks pretty awesome!

Cheers

For the occasional misfire, I would check your front HT lead for wear where it rubs on the tickover screw.

Get yourself a cheap set of lights off eBay and send them to get pimped up...

Just a word of warning. I've had the Simpson detour modification done to my headlights and when I took it for its mot the tester wasn't to happy with light pattern they produce. Basically there wasn't one, as the chrome reflectors they fit are plain and don't produce any form of pattern which they measure on a special machine. Fortunately he still passed it with an advisory note on the certificate but said most mot stations would fail it. On a plus note the lights are 300% better than the originals so for me worth the risk.

Yeah, the MOT tester who did my Uly said "It kicks up a bit", I didn't have a clue what he was on about but I got a pass certificate and moved on :D

I bought a set of scabby headlamps off someone on here and had them pimped, so I have my originals in case I get into a sticky situation...

Yeah for a few minutes when he was testing them I had that horrible feeling that I had wasted my money and that I was going to have to find a new original set of lights. On another note how hot do the lenses get on them. I can't touch them there that hot, the flies not only get splated but fried also.

I put some insulation tape on mine as a token effort when I took the Uly to Spain, and it got so hot that most of it fell off... :run:

The bulb holders are held in by two small rivits which drill out easily. You can then re position them to give a flat dip beam.
