Finally started. Rotated the engine and removed the rocker covers this afternoon hoping to get it finished in the next week of so. One thing I would like to add to Pash's list would be 2 x Retaining Ring 65325-83A (XB12s 2005) as the front one was shot. I'll replace them both anyway.

Thanks to Pash, Maz and other for their advice on this one :yup:

My sportster is an 04. Last year at 32,000 miles I rebuilt the top end and replaced the cams. By suggestion on a vendors websight I took a look at my oilpump gear and it was worn. Probably would have lasted a while longer, but I replaced it with the new Buell gear.

I wonder if the upgraded gear which looks like brass will wear as well, but not drop hard bits when it fails?

Is there a way to see the gear by pulling the pump instead of pulling the cam chest?

I am intending to do the oil pump drives on both my 2000 X1 and my 06 Ully over the next few weeks, both bikes are between 30 and 35000 miles and neither have been replaced before.
Once done I will post some pics of the gears for reference.
It's interesting that Pash seems to think the 06 onwards bikes are different from earlier bikes so maybe I will be able to help throw some light on this theory

06 and 07 bikes had a Bronze (or BeCu) oil pump drive gear which I think :maz: said was a fix for the Buell race bikes. It wears more slowly.

Have a sift though this post - viewtopic.php?p=176122#p176122

Or do a search on '26391-06' or 'bronze gear'

All the info is there.

Just finished replacing the oil pump drive gear. The old one had a step worn into the driving face about 10-15% of the tooth width. Not sure how much longer it would have lasted but very relieved I don't need to worry about it now :) .

I shall probably be doing this job when things warm up a bit.

What are people using to lock the crank with.....and what do you use to refit the ignition cover? :oooops:

There's a special crankshaft locking tool (HD-43984) for that, but I had good success with putting the engine into gear and locking the back wheel with a piece of timber batten. I suppoes, you could as well use the primary locking tool (HD-46283), but you will need a helping hand then (as it tends to drop) and you have to flush the gearbox oil.

Managed to find a locking tool for £40 delivered (JIMS 16-1665).....not the cheapest bit of flat steel in the world but at least I've got it if I need it again.....
