Last year got and advisory on mot for belt being slack. This year put it into Southampton Harley for mot and they have pinged it but have to wait till Monday when the guy who knows about this stuff comes in. I cant think of any way of adjusting the the belt tension. I have a free spirit tensioner fitted. Do you think I have to have a new belt ??

No..........you need to go to Dealer who understands real motorcycles. As Maz stated in a recent post, did they check it while it was weighted?

If the belt is even remotely slack on an XB (even with a FS tensioner) methinks you have a serious issue.......like gearbox output bearing for example

There's no adjustment for belt tension on an XB.

Bit of contradiction here... no the bike was'nt waited which is a good point that I had thought about. Surely if there was a bearing gone I would hear something or notice something. What about the belt stretching I see from the manual that you are supposed to change it every 15000 miles I think I may have done that !

At 215 quid for a belt, they are best changed 1/2 mile before they break

A stretched belt (which doesn't happen) would be compensated for by the FS tensioner, asuming it aint seized etc.

You'd be amazed at how dumb some folks are.....I once visited a main dealer and was invited into their workshop to look at a customers bike (XB9R) that they couldn't figure out.......they'd done a 'full' service as well as shit loadsa other work and were confused as to why the new belt they'd fitted was very slack......I got the 'tech' to dig out the output blanking plug and guess what....the outboard mainshaft needle race had disintegrated......'tech' said he'd never seen anything like it ........customer was charged for all work done and ended up scrapping the bike because he couldn't afford the fix

Free spirit tensionor was jammed !

how have hd dealers lasted so long?they seem to be a major disaster area judging by posts on here and my experiance with my xb.i remember taking mine for a service at a dealer in sussex and they had never seen a free spirits tenshioner before.
