Was thinking exactly the same as you Garry ie. why not build it full size, Spitfire is an icon and only an airfix model should be out of scale IMO.

I may well be wrong about this aircraft, but a lot of classic kit planes are built to scale because of the CAA rule book has stuff about overall weight and wing loading. Builders can then sometimes get their projects on a 'Permit to Fly' rather than a COA. This means you can fully maintain your aircraft youself. If it's on a COA, then you can only do stuff like check oil, blow up tyres etc
