I noticed when I changed my clutch cable that the bolts on my XB9 exhaust header pipes were in a terrible state. I bought some st steel ones and had a little go at removing the corroded ones. Ah no ! I sprayed with WD40 and wire brushed and then gave um a little try with a socket and extension but they are stuck I don't want to go on too much incase I round um off. This must be a common problem any tips ???

They may well break the stud on removal attempt. Maz has a nice little induction heater that gives a fighting chance of removal without shearing (and then removing the heads for spark erosion of the studs)

Apparently you can build an induction heater from an old microwave but I imagine if you get it wrong you could have a mini chernobyl fallout in your garage.

I like it but not the price and the micro wave conversion sounds like a Darwin award winner !

No, Snap-On dont do one, they market the Miniductor which (for now) is the only commercially available tool for the automotive industry.......the ebay kit above is the basic kit without all the coils etc.......the one I have is the full (240V) kit and cost me £840

Top bit of kit, just wish it'd been cheaper.....which no doubt it will be when everyone else starts to copy it.......rumour has it that Sealey are about to announce their version

It makes copaslip look cheap.

....dont work on exhaust studs/nuts......they get way too hot and 'evaporate' copperslip in a heartbeat

You can monitor the studs at service time and remove and refit the nuts... Copaslip may not last long, but the copper substrate will remain...

The problem is that you are up against any corrosion on the exposed parts of the studs, which the nut has to pass over...

Interestingly, the later exhaust flanges are thicker, reducing the amount of exposed thread beyond the nuts...

I fit the H-D stainless flanges to most of my work, they're far superior to the poxy chrome plated shite fitted as standard to Buells.
IME the studs are the least of the problem re. corrosion, it's the nuts that become a blob of rust that a 1/2'' socket would never recognise .....and the ret. rings are usually wafer thin with corrosion as well
