Its not something I need to do yet but can't help but notice how bad the studs & nuts look so I'm keeping an eye on it. I've got both air & manual impact drivers so no problem there. I've never come across left hand drill bits though but as I don't have a reversible drill that probably doesn't matter, stud extractors are left hand once you've got somewhere to shove 'em.

Headstock bearings are my first 'big' job, then when I do the tyres a look at the wheel bearings to see how they're doing.

Don't use a windy gun
Don't use stud extractors

Only stud extractors that work are the Snap-On splined type.

Last time I used a stud extractor it was on my wifes Golf.....followed very shortly by removing the head and getting it spark eroded out.....they are as brittle as a really brittle thing and unless the stud gives up without a fight it WILL snap off...

They're not the ones I'm on about.

...... OK for rounded out cap heads etc. but not for broken bolts/studs.

Do you mean the ones that come in two parts Maz , the splined piece you tap into the drilled hole with it's matching nut that slides down the spline so that you apply the pressure right against the broken stud? ..........If so they are very good 8-)

Like this one?

http://buy1.snapon.com/catalog/item.asp ... _ID=675455

Just out of interest, is there a way for an ordinary Joe Bloggs to buy stuff from Snap-on in the UK like they seem to be able to do in the states?

Go to your nearest garage and ask when the snap on man comes, then turn up to meet him. He will love you cos most of his sales are on the drip...

Thanks :yup:

I didn't know whether the Snap on man would be happy to sell to an individual.....though I suppose these days my money's as good as anyone elses!

There is an independant Landrover garage that I'm fairly well in with; I'll see if I can find out when he's there next.....I do know that the owner/technical director keeps the snap-on man well employed!

You can buy Snap-On directly on line but without a dealer you might miss any special deals and in the very unlikely case you need to make a warranty claim, you could really struggle :)

I can see why the splined type would be better, not come across them before so definitely worth knowing about. Think I'll add one to the tool box ready. :yup:
