Hey every one, just looking for a bit of advice, can buy an x1 cheep ish, but before I take the plunge just wondering is there any real expensive things to look out for? Bike is pretty cheap (1900 euro) and looks rough. Would love to turn it into something like ash's one on Facebook . Any advice would be great thanks

Buells are money pits and to get it to the standard you are talking about would cost you an easy 10K

cheap is rarely a good idea since very few of the things that go wrong thru neglect are cheap to fix.

for 4 grand you could expect to buy one that has had most of the expensive and important things sorted out and is cosmetically nice; whereas to get those things done to a bike that requires them is likely to cost you 3 or 4 grand plus.

You would hope, or just an optimistically priced old nail!

What year is the bike, how many miles has it done, whats the service history like (important) ... Someone will be along shortly with a list of things to really look for to ensure its at least half decent. You can then judge for yourself whats its worth.

Its a 99 x1, 24000 miles, hoping to go see it Saturday. I was kinda hoping to know what to look out for before viewing. I know what normal stuff to look for but model specific stuff id be interested in.

If I was going to view it, as well as the normal stuff such as consumables (tyres, brake pads, wheel bearings, headraces etc.) condition and condition of cosmetics (which could hide mechanical damage), I would be looking for:
* Confirmation that all recalls have been done
* Confirmation that the bike has been serviced, at least to the service manual
* If the belt has been replaced recently
* If the oil pump drive gear has been replaced recently (and with what)
* If the shock still has any damping left in it (or oil)
* If the updated primary adjuster has been fitted (I think these came in 2000)
* If the front disc bobbins are worn
* If the Check Engine Lamp is 'off' during normal running
* If the fuel pump is noisy

I would also be looking for all the nice stuff that got put on later models:
* Updated exhaust header bracket
* Updated gear change
* Sprung rider's footpegs

And then the recognised aftermarket stuff:
* Nice muffler or Pro-Race system
* Forcewinder or NHRS/Hammer type sealed spam tin air filter

I will have missed loads of stuff, but dont worry if it is not all 100%, just think about what you might want to spend on it.

Making it like the one in the pics is not going to be cheap, and whilst you are pulling it apart to do this, regardless of how nice the bike is, you will want to do things like paint the frame, paint the wheels etc. otherwise it will look rubbish (like any one of my fleet )...

From talking to the guy theres a new rear shock, new front brake disk(bobbins were worn), vance and hines exhaust, power commander, polished wheels and forcewinder air thingy. Also headers are wrapped. O ya it has uprated front engine mount too.

Ditch the power commander...

Be careful that the wrapped headers are not damaged underneath...

I pulled some wrap off a set of headers for a mate, and the metal underneath was really grotty

No kidding! I´ve stopped counting, but I easily spent what I paid for the bike, and still going....

X1's are a keeper as most tubers, they just keep getting better the more you spend on them.
I love mine and can't wait for some nice weather to scratch away
