Bike's a '97 S1 Lightning.
Just lately, it's started making a "scrunching" (as in scrrruuncchhh, not screwing up paper) noise when I press the starter button.
OK once running.
Noise is not coming from the engine.
Could it be the starter motor?

As above, probably a weak battery

You got the old starter or the upgraded (recalled ... ? :maz: ) one fitted

(I think the old version is a silvery gold colour, the newer ones are black)

Starters are all the same, no matter what colour.

Sounds like the sprag clutch could be on the way out.

If it is the sprag clutch, will I do anymore damage riding it 20-30 miles to a dealer?
And, is it summat that should be left to a dealer to sort out, especially as my level of mechanical competency is just above "how fast does it go mister"!!

Too far from Maz, but Tubbs is just over 100 miles along the coast.
Mind you, the thought of that distance on the poxy standard seat is encouragement enough to pop the bike in the van to Tubb's

Can highly recommend him and the chaps at moorespeed mate. You will get a first rate service and an attention to detail sadly lacking at some dealerships.

Take cake!
