Hi

I have an '06 Ulysses that has been converted into a bomber (lightning) (remember that?!) and a really, really annoying fault.

From start up, the bike is fine (although I have to charge the battery if left alone for more than a week or so). So, the bike fires up and off I go……for about 10 or so miles it's all good.

Then it starts getting really weird. Firstly, the revcounter starts doing a little dance…pinging up and down erratically. Then, after a few more miles…excessive backfire and spluttering- especially on acceleration. This is accompanied by more rev needle dancing but this time it is swinging away like a liberal marriage.

Then after a few more miles, the bike starts to lunge and almost bunnhop as the splutters get worse and the needle is all over the show. It is quite hard to stay on at this point.

Then, a few more miles along….it all stops and everything is fine for ages.

Any clues of where to look? I really want to get the bike ready for the summer (I ride all year, but have other work horses for the snowy stuff).

This is the same fault I may have mentioned ages ago, but I've had more kids/bikes since then and only now got the buell out of the garage. I would love to ride it this year :)

Many thanks.

Is that sensor the one which has a wire going through the square hole in the top of the head?

When the tacho behaves like that it's because the ignition feed is being cut......if you're lucky, it could just be a chattering relay but on your bike....... :)

Hi Maz

Where would I find the relay? Also, what if I'm unlucky?? :)

Whilst I'm here-can you remember the name of that gizmo you whipped out? Something to do with the exhaust? It is still sat on the shelf and I may as well flog it :D

Ah, and how would I ascertain it's working condition? :)

And be sure your earth wires from the battery are secure to the frame points. Check that simple stuff first.

I would echo that, from memory I think there are three under the seat, even if they appear to be tight clean them up and give them a tweak. That was the solution to a customer's long running problem some years ago although I don't recall his rev counter cutting out as well.

Wire from the cam position sensor to a deutsch connector somewhere behind the rear pot on my M2 was chafing and shorting against the casings and causing similar probs - spit cof bang vroom splutter, rev counter flailing around like a 2 stroke... Fixed with a bit of insulation tape (until I got round to sorting it more properly)

<sigh> depressing update.

The bike has been with a local garage that is as used to Buells as i'm gonna get around here. They have had the Buell for a month, during which time they've dropped the engine and checked everything they feel they can.

They are a fantastic bunch of lads and one of the staff is a friend of the family, so I know they've tested the shit out of this bike....but the problem still remains.

Startup= fine
Riding along for a few miles= fine
....then the power stuttering: rev counter and tacho needle both dropping and rising/dancing at the same time. It is at its worse when you accelerate (it doesn't really do it when you're not on the throttle); i'll be riding along and then both needles will drop and there is a silence...almost as though the engine is off...and then there is a massive 'POP POP POP' and the power kicks back in. It can become utterly un-ridable and i'll have to pull over because there is just nothing. I turn everything off, wait a moment, turn it on again and ride off. Sometimes the issue comes back within seconds, sometimes not for half an hour.

I'm now at a point where the bike is SORN'd and has no MOT. It's cost me a fortune for no return at this garage and they've suggested I take it to a local harley place as it 'may be the coils and they can just swap out some coils from another Uly to test'. I don't know and I certainly don't know how much that will cost...but I can't afford it anymore.

In the past year since it's 20k mile service, i've ridden this bike no more than 4 or 5 times. I have paid almost as much as I paid for the bike in garage time and although I desperately want to keep the faith and LOVE Buell, i'm thinking enough is enough.

I'm tempted to stick it up on eBay, open it to Europe with a clear description of the faults and then take the loss.

I am truly gutted.
