I know I am going to get a kicking for this, as I can not find any logic to it, but here goes.

Sometimes I get this at 30 or 70 MPH but not both at the same time. (edit I think it might do).

What I do is turn the engine off and then re-start it. I have tried this a number of times, over the past 6 months as I thought there was a problem, and the problem goes away. The engine runs perfect every time. I did it tonight and the engine run perfect. Starting before the light goes out does not seem to make any diff.

I can run around at 10MPH in third, without slipping the clutch when the engine is right, and that is very good.

I think it may be down to the slow re-fresh rate of the engine control system, mine is a 06 bike, as I only notice a problem with differing air temps. Maybe that is why they use a more poweful/faster ECM on the 08 plus bikes.

My bike setup it not the same as others and is well run in. I do know one thing and that is it works for me. Of course I could just be pissed

My XB9 has some surging at 4000 rp, but in cold weather only, Not connected to engine temperatures. No problems in hot weather like now. I recently read a post in a CB1300 forum, where someone told of getting rid of this by just disconnecting and cleaning all sensor connectors.

I reckon your front cylinder is running lean...

The UK ECMSpy team will soon have some instrumented standard headers for a 9 and a 12 which will be free to use... Plus setup assistance at local dynos and with datalogging...

That might probably be a reason, but I have to think about how to fix that. Air temp correction is applied to both cylinders, so if the front cylinder is running lean at low air temp, I need to find a way that impacts the front cylinder only.

The only way you can do that is with the front cylinder correction map for rear cylinder temperature. Or richen the front in that area to reduce the margin against lean instability on cold days...

I'd be very surprised if you can get any XB12 to do that. 15 mph is most definitely 1st gear territory for me and even then some clutch slip is required.

There is def something going on as I had it again, at 30mph, tonight. It is only slight and not a big deal, as you can ride through it, but it can be slighty annoying. I tend to be very picky about how my bikes run and like to get the best from them.

Air 23C, pulls over, turns ignition off, high speed fan comes on, turns ignition on, fan goes off, waits for light to go out and re-starts bike. Engine runs perfect, I can "roll-on" the throttle at 30mph in 5th gear no problem and can ride the bike "on-the-throttle" without any juddering. Again 3rd @ 10mph but that is pushing it :D but it does do it.

My Uly is a 06, 11K, Remus can/Powerizer, K&N air filter (a bit dirty), Ultimate air thingy, breather mod, new plugs, new battery, R/H scoop, timing checked, new oil (Torco changed every 2.5K), no primary chain lash, newish belt (4K), FST, 5th gear plug, gearbox output bearing is fine and the STD map.

The breather mod is a must and the Powerizer works as well. The engine is a right old lump and I never thought it would run like a Jap 4 but mine runs very well. 3rd is pushing it but 2nd should be no problem.

Powerizer did not resolve this problem.

Well just when I thought my engine running problems were over they come back to kick me. Went for a 20ish mile ride tonight then I stopped for a 30/45 min coffee. Bike stops and fan comes on. Started the bike up after my coffee and the idle is all over the place, above and below 1000rpm, grunting, squeeking, leave it trying to tick over and it cuts out. Start her up again same problem till it cuts out again. Start her up again only this time rev it but the revs are all over the place as it struggles to idle without cutting out. I pull away having to slip the clutch to keep the revs up all the way through traffic until I hit the open road. As I accelerate I can tell it's running rough as there's not as much torque. The only way I can describe this is like the timing is out when this happens.

I rang Riders Service dept, explained everything and asked if they come accross this on 09 bikes before. Was told the TPS sometimes goes out for no apparent reason and needs resetting. My bike is now booked in but I bet it runs well when they see it

Well I asked if this method was the right one...

ignition on/off/on/off etc.

They said yes thats how it's done on my model but they would want to see what's causing it first! It will take a miracle to get my bike to fail under test I reckon cause it's so intermittent!

Landsend mentioned another way which I havn't tried and it was not suggested by Riders either!

Lands End said...

Hi PH, the HARD RESET is NOT done by the HD 'techs'.
They will not have a clue what you are going on about!

I better do this before I pay Riders a visit!

Hard reset is a load of bollox IMO and certainly wont work for an 09.

Ign on, kill switch to 'run' fully open and fully close the throttle 3 times, holding for 1 second at each extreme, ignition off and back on again = job done.
