I get your points about not paying if the job isn't done, but then surely in this case (and others like it) when it is not known for sure what the issue is, it is reasonable to expect to pay for any investigative work. It is still man hours. Dunno, I din't find it unreasonable.

If its a loom, then are we talking buy a new Uly (??) loom or go over the current loom with a fine tooth comb and see what is what?

I agree that you should pay for investigative work but the person doing it should be reasonably confident and competent at what they are looking at/for otherwise you're just throwing good money after bad....and if these chaps don't have the experience and knowledge to diagnose faults on your machine they should say so at the start rather than just keep on taking your money from you...

This is exactly why I investigated Muffins electrical problem a couple of years ago myself ...........It would run perfect for approx. 70 miles from cold then cut out without warning so every thing done required a 70 mile test ride ..... the problem was confirmed as a CPS signal loss as suspected all along BUT a new sensor didn't cure it or a known good secondhand one OR reseating the connector pins , it turned out to be a fault in the loom somewhere and cured by making a new loom direct from the CPS to the ecu , finally confirmed by logging with ecmspy once I had a laptop with a battery that would last for 70 miles lOl

The coils should be the same. Sure it's not the front HT lead?

Get a new coil from Riders of Bristol, mention UKBEG for 13% discount...

quote from a mate who has a thread up about it on another forum:

Quote:
When cold it runs fine ticks over nicely but do about 10-15 miles and it pops bangs then stops. I have taken his coil off and the specs are Primary windings 0.5-0.7 Ohms secondary windings 5.5k-7.5k Ohms.
So just to check I am doing this right I thought I would share as I know there are some electrical chaps on here and it is not my strongest point. Check twice cut once as they say.
readings at room temperature were 11.77 on secondary windings and 1 ohm on primary

which has prompted the feeling that the coil is kerknackered

Update from my mate:

Had a spare hour this afternoon and got to poking at the Buell. Tripped out the fault codes and I may need the matches after all. The engine light almost flattened the battery
Anyway this is how it works so feel free to peruse the vid and confirm/argue with my conclusion
Light flashes quickly to show start and finish after each fault code. There is a 2 second delay then first code number, 2 second delay then second number then intermission then it starts again for a new fault code.
So for example ------ * *** ------ would represent 13.
I get 14, 15, 44, 36, 11 and 13
https://www.dropbox.com/s/fx7wxhnpuy2rp ... 8.mp4?dl=0

Fault codes are as below but 13 can be ignored as this has been removed on the bike. Some I cannot check as I do not have the software or cable but some I can check with a multimeter.
P0123 11 Throttle Position Sensor Circuit High 6.8 THROTTLE POSITION (TP) SENSOR: DTC P0122 (11), P0123 (11)

Had exactly the same recently on Filbertfatknackers XB......wiring harness had chaffed through on the rear cylinder head fins.
