'ere :maz: - I assume it's just HDMoCo's standard Hall effect sensor that's fitted to leccy speedo buells!

Yes I have a reason for asking - No you wont like it. But I may need some more advice later on :shut:

Finished the sensor today. Will try it out a bit before putting some color on it (black).

I can admit that the enclosure is a bit bulky. Could have made it slightly smaller, but still I am pretty satisfied with the result.

I read your construction with interest  as I have fitted the US gearing to my M2 so it means the speedo is out by approx 18%.

So I was wondering if I could modify the pulse coming out of the VSS to correct for this 18% varience and get the speedo reading correctly again (I know I could buy a US speedo and solve the problem but there going for £100 and I can spend that on an issue I feel with a bit of thought I could solve)

I have even thought I would be surprised if the 2 speedo where that much different I suspect there the same inside but a jumper determines if there Euro or US, I plan to look into this over the winter

anybody got a broken US speedo they don't want so I can have a play :?:

Roddy SPEEDOHEALER

Maz - OK then

I'm in a playful mood at5 the mo' - I'm thinking of making a self calibrating (via GPS) speedo. Using summat like UBLOX DR thing or Racelogics GPSTRAN crossed with a HD sensor somehow.

Why? - why not?. Long fancied a GPS accurate speedo - BUT they don't work in tunnels. I know several folk who've contested radar traps based on GPS recorders - and they've won EVERY time. Mind you they're not in North Wales.

The bit you PROBABLY will dislike intensely - I may use one of these as output device

Just 'cos they're a piece of piss to set up. But will work off HD/BUELL feeds from the box.

Chris.....

Roddy, brand new US speedos are 123 quid incl. vat. ie. same price as Dakota or S+S speed healers.
I have a stripped speedo to see if it would be as easy as moving a jumper....it aint, tis all IC, so would need reflashing by someone clever....Gunter ?

It is possible to modify the pulse train, but not very simple. I would use a microcontroller (PIC12F629), reading the pulses from the VSS on one pin (interrupt) and sending out a new pulse train on another.
Maybe a PIC model with PWM would be a better choice.

With some luck, maybe they have implemented some kind of serial interface for setting up the speedometer. Would still be a bit complicated, not knowing the protocol they use but at least you don't have to reflash the firmware.

What kind of hardware is in it? Is it a microcontroller somewhere?

Tis a well populated PCB...couple of chips incl. a 42 pin jobbie :?

Why not a frequency to voltage converter, a resistor (to step down) or transistor (to step up), then a voltage to frequncy converter?

I don't think they are jumpered. It's much too expensive and too error prone to have them jumpered by hand afterwards, so I guess, speedos are just ordered and built in several flavours, according to the various transmissions.

And the resistor could be a potentiometer to calibrate the speedo... ;)

It's along those lines I was thinking

Chris cheers for the pointer but as mentioned the dohicky is the same price as a new speedo.

I'll investigate this further and if I get anywhere I'll post up on the forum but dinna haud yir breath it's a winter project :D

€79 here in Sunny Spain - 80 quid from UK disti. Still a way off 123 quid. But true it's close-ish. Actually 123 quid is not bad for a leccy speedo.

Maz - Knew you'd not appreciate the speedo.

Would sir approve of
