Get a nasty noise from my S1 starter when trying to restart if engine hot. Not sure if it has been getting worse it's been doing it awhile, no noise at all when cold. Did a search on here but couldn't find anything if this has been covered before. Haven't checked archive mind. Did a google search and found suggestion of pressing start button for a second before trying to start so will try that next time. Wondering there is something I should look at to prevent expensive repair later, and what causes it?

 Check your battery/charging system is good before trying anything else. IMO takes more effort to turn over when hot for some reason ?

:yt: if that battery is starting to die it may not be engaging the starter fully and positively. I'm a bit gutted this week as I've just got around to putting Muffin back on the road with his new front mount only to find that after a mere 14 years his original battery appears to have died :( at £153 though as good as the original batteries are he may get a cheaper replacement. I see motobatt now do a black version that fits for about half that price. Muffins currently running on my spare Uly battery which is smaller capacity and also needed the leads crossing over but it starts and runs fine on it.

i was wondering if battery may be losing power, it is 7 years old.
Found touching starter very briefly before trying to start does the trick, wish I'd known a year or so back. Maybe the compression is on max when stopped before it has time to lose some and a brief touch takes it over tdc, or gives battery a bit more chance? Just guessing
