I've posted in other forum areas about wanting to change my 2008 XB12XT fan logic from speed based to temperature based. Pash did an excellent write up of how to do this with ECM Spy, so off I went to get a copy, only Gunter appears to be away and hasn't got back to me for over a week. So I got a copy of Tuner Pro RT up and running connected it to the bike, backed up my current ECM image to a .bin file and proceeded (after reading a description of where the fan setting are in Tuner Pro RT, adjusted the fan settings to match the ones in ECMSpy. I turned the speed based setting off and adjusted the key-on and key-off values to ones that I thought to be reasonable

It was all going so well, until I clicked to upload the new ECM file to the ECM itself. Everything appeared to upload OK and Tuner Pro reported that it was successful. But the bike now won't start (starter button does nothing) and the engine light comes on.

Hmmm, one thing that makes me suspicious is that my USB ECM no longer works (I even tried it in another computer with the drivers freshly loaded and Windows doesn't recognise the device). I wonder if I power spiked the usb cable and damaged it?

Anyway I've ordered a coupe of new usb-ttl cables, which will arrive on Tuesday, so I'll reattach the Deutsch connector to one of them,and see if I can reconnect to the ECM to upload the original bin file I copied from it.

I forgot to add every time I turn the bike off the fan stays on for 3 minutes so this part is working:

I think I found the issue, the bin fie I uploaded to the ECM has no fuel or ignition maps (all zeros). I'm not sure how that happened as I just downloaded the bin fie from the ECM, modified the fan settings and uploaded it back to the ECM. I also dismantled the USB ECM cable tonight, whoever made it did a poor job, the unused red,green and brown wires were all bunched together uninsulated, so my guess is that the red 5v+ wire shorted on one of the other wires when I was working on the bike,which has damaged the FTDI chip. The bin file below has the same fan settings as the one I loaded into the bike, but the fuel and ignition maps are still the same as the original bin file.

It's definitely bricked. I built a new ECM cable today, which tests fine in Tuner Pro, but it won't connect to the bike ECM like it did before. Can Harley Dealers reflash the ECM with a good image (I mean a complete reflash?) or am I looking at new ECM time? The one have is Y0152.1AM 0205. Has anyone got a spare one they would part with?

Thanks Pash I'm going to have another go at it one night this week, but if you PM me your address I'll happily send it down to you for surgery if I can't get it back and running. I feel really stupid about this, I've done a reasonable amount of work on ECUs / mapping and I regularly flash new firmware into devices in the course of my job, this seemed like it would be so straight forward. Tuner Pro looked to have a good reputation and the operating instructions / documents were all pretty good. Ah well chalk that one up to experience I guess.

OK, with help from Pash the bike is up and running again. After realising that the registration emails from the ECMSpy website were being blocked by my ISP (TalkTalk, I've no idea why) I used a gmail account and had ECMSpy up and running in under 30 mins. Pash supplied me with an EEPROM file which I uploaded to the bike with ECMSpy. I then cleared the error codes down and tried to start the bike, the engine check light came on again. I quick check of the error codes again showed the side stand failure code had returned. I disabled the side stand interlock in ECMSpy, cleared the error and the light didn't come back on, I'm going to have to check the side stand switch and wiring later. So perhaps this is a case of using the right tools for the job?

Anyway, many thanks to Pash for helping me out with this. My ECMSpy journey starts here.

Hi Bones,
Glad you're getting it sorted.

I used ECMspy to "try" fix the fan issue on my XB12XT (08 model) and while it went ok...removed check mark...burned it....then disconnected and reconnected and the tick mark was still gone...I've noticed that the fan doesn't stay on after a ride on the bike when I'm sure its warm.

So do I need to alter the Key off max duration setting ? I didn't touch this the last time....so not sure what the setting was ???

I'm too early on in my Buell / ECMSpy experiences to give advice on that. However I've also set my 08 XB12XT to temperature based fan operation and yes the fan doesn't come on when the bike is switched off, but my experiences over the last week have shown that if you set the 100% run time setting to '0' rather than '1' the fan will come on every time you turn the ignition off and it will run for the number of minutes configured in the Max Duration (min) settings.

But does that not defeat the idea of it being temp based and only running if it needs to based on engine temp ?

Like I said it was more of an observation, I'll need to investigate further as there will be another setting somewhere which controls the temp at which the fan runs with the key off, as clearly the ones on the same ECMSpy page don't work directly and reference something else. I think that because that EEPROM has been set for speed based operation there will be a setting elsewhere required for temperature based operation that hasn't been set or has a really low value in it so the fan always runs when you turn the key off?
