UKBEG members may be interested in this tribute to R.J. Mitchell & Supermarine which we’re organising on Easter Saturday 26th March.

While we’re down in the area over the Easter weekend we’re going to visit the Solent Sky Museum and R.J. Mitchell's memorial at South Stoneham Cemetery, where we’ll pay our respects to the great man :worthy:...

Meet at the Solent Sky Museum between 10.30 and 11.00am.

The museum tells the story of R.J. Mitchell and Supermarine; and houses over 20 airframes on display from the golden age of aviation, including the Spitfire and the record-breaking Supermarine S6A Schneider Trophy racing seaplane.

Web site links:
Solent Sky Museum: here
R.J. Mitchell: here and here.

That museum looks interesting Chris... 'on my doorstep' but never knew it was there!

That's the power of the internet for you, quick and easy research at the touch of a button.

R.J. Mitchell is one of my all time heroes and following the recent 80th anniversary of the Spitfire I thought I'd see if there was something we could visit while we're in the area. We're going to make the most of Easter Saturday with this event and then a lengthy tour around your beautiful countryside.

Then you need to spend a night in his bed :o (room)
Next time you're near Plymouth, book a night here... suitable only for a very special anniversary! lOl

On the roundabout entering Southampton airport is a memorial to the Spitfire, looks like it's been strafing the local Mercedes dealership.

The prototype landing gear wasn't up to much either.

Tony, I was thinking that would make a great location for a Buell picture, with the structures support legs airbrushed out of course.

I would probably get locked up as a terrorist for doing such a thing near the airport.
