hi, i have owned my ulysses xb12x for 4 months now, it is a 2007 model and whilst away on a trip the drive belt snapped. the bike is 4 months out of warranty and has only covered 9000 miles!!! after a painfull recovery bill i got the bike home and rang the dealers only to be told its not covered under warranty and a new belt is £240.00. does anyone know of anywhere that sells replacement belts for the ulysses at a better price than this as i personally think its a bit excessive and also to snap after 9000 miles doesnt boost confidence for taking it on long haul trips. all advice welcomed

regards steve

I stand to be corrected, but as far as I know the belts have a "lifetime Guarantee"

well 50K anyway.

A sort of yes/no thing on that. I had mine done just out of time but it has a lot to do with how good you HD/Buell dealer is.

If my belt snapped after 4 months of ownership I'd expect it to be replaced by the dealer gratis, go and stamp your feet and make your voice heard a little higher up the ladder at the dealer you bought it from.

Belts are 180.90 incl. vat.......did they include fitting for that price ?

Original blurb re. lifetime warranty has now been removed from all Buell literature/websites :x

If anyone has old brochures or copies of Fuell mag with interviews/quotes from Erik himself re. the 'lifetime' warranty, I'd be very grateful for copies as I intend to challenge Buell UK about this

i also read that these belts have alifetime warranty and now dealers only give 2 years to which mine is 4 months out of warranty. the cost of £240.00 is not including fitting. i have told the dealers that if they supply the belt as a good will gesture i will fit it myself but not going to get final decision til tuesday but it doesnt look like they gonna replace it. also told by the dealer they have had these belts snap after 3000 miles!!!!!!!!!!!! the belt was my only concern i had before buying the bike but i was reassured by the lifetime warranty on the belt so bought it. the worst thing is the belt shows no signs of wear and tear and has a clean break at the point of snapping.

Who is your dealer ?
They're taking the piss on the price of the belt....prices are set by HDB....ask them to show you the screen showing the price, bet they wont
I have the belts in stock and they're 180 quid......there's no aftermarket version.
If the dealer were to supply a belt for you to fit, they would have to pay for the belt themselves......HDB will only supply a warranty belt if a claim is approved by Dick W and the dealer fits it.

Forget chain conversions unless they also include a cushdrive rear wheel and even then getting the ratios correct will see the chain eating your swingarm.....the Buell box is challenged enough without asking it to cope with a chain

Two contradictory thoughts:

1) if you bought the bike because it had a lifetime warranty on the belt and this is not true then the sale is void because the condition that the belt had a liftime warranty is at the heart of the contract. You could suggest that you will repudiate the contract on the basis of misrepresentation.

2) the dealer will probably tell you that the belt was damaged by detritis from the road that they cannot be held liable for and the lifetime warranty is only valid for manufacturing defects.

So....your second hand bike is out of it's warranty period but you expect a consumable part to be covered by it? :? :?

As it happens I agree that it is disgraceful for a belt to snap....but then things work until they break and you don't know how it was treated before you owned it..... buy a new belt at the correct price and continue to enjoy your motorcycle....

I have a 06 Uly and thougt the belt warranty was a great idea but on the other hand I did not believe it 100% myself.

Look at it this way. You will get about 10k out of a chain set, 15-20k with an oiler and even 30k if you take it off and clean it every week. A top brand chain set, for this sort of bike, is about the same sort of price as a belt. If your thinking chain, think another bike. If your thinking 50-100k then get a BMW shaftie and even then the seals can go.

Look up the posts, about the belt, and what you need to know about running an XB with it. Like a FST, rear bearing wear, not twisting the belt, re-fiting the rear wheel correctly, etc.

The latest version of the belt is, so Buell say, better than the one you may have on your bike. Look at the part number and get the latest version. Do not let them palm you of with old stock.
