Everyone has a skill level (genuine and imagined), there are tasks I do, there are tasks I prefer to hand over to people with more knowledge than myself. Buells may not be the most complicated of beasts, but they do have a lot of little ways that you can ruin them through ignorance.

Once killed the same bike twice following a Haynes manual
XS 850 - Horizontally split bottom end, there was a sunken nut between the top and bottom cases that was hidden by dirt and not listed in the manual (bent both the cases with little wooden wedges trying to split them).
Same bike following a bottom end swap - followed manual guidance when stripping the head and ended up fitting one cam 180 degrees out (the manual was incorrect)- this actually killed the bike, ran out of money

, since then there is a a level I do not go beyond

I agree, but that doesn’t mean nobody else can fix anything on their bike, as Maz seems to think. I don’t understand why advice and technical know-how is given, but always ends with “you can’t do it properly unless Maz does it though”.

Maz, thank you for your advice and help, but no, I won’t be taking it to you, because 1) it will cost more than doing it locally, and 2) I just don’t want to go to Manchester twice. Yes there are other places that can fix a Buell, but I won’t name them because I sense a barrage of insults ready to be thrown at them no matter what I say.

I will let you know how it ends up with my bike, and at that point you will then be able to say either “yes you can do it yourself cheaper”, or “I fuckin told you so”.

Not if the rotor has to be sent off to another company for a week.

Haha. Well I don’t think Maz would want me there anyway, and I wouldn’t want to hang around in mancheater for a week either. It’s all off and posted to the appropriate companies now anyway. :yup:

I'm sure you're right about there being other places that can fix Buells correctly, but there's also 'well respected' HDB dealers who really don't have a clue. Last year, at a Buell event, I watched one of these people try to adjust a clutch in an entirely inappropriate way for his mate. I did start to offer some advice as he borrowed my tools, but he clearly wasn't interested in listening, so I let him carry on. Distinguishing between them is the tricky part.
